First and foremost, you will not find a more beautiful campus and natural surrounding than Cullowhee USA! I was a University of Georgia transfer to Western Carolina as a student-athlete and a University of South Carolina intern. After visiting Western, I found a reason to want to continue my education as well as my athletic endeavors. It is true that like many schools, student involvement was difficult at that time due to an athletic program that was struggling overall. There was always a struggle to get students and alumni involved in the athletic program during those years. But as soon as a winning tradition began in other athletics such as men's/women's Track & Field, women's soccer, men's basketball, our tested baseball team as well as ladies softball team, enthusiasm has picked up at WCU over the past couple of decades! Our band has marched in the Rose Bowl parade and the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade while consistently mentioned amongst some of the better collegiate bands in all the country. As we all know that college is about learning and indeed about educating ourselves to become highly productive citizens in our society, our extra curricular activities are how we're marketed most effectively. We have always been recognized as a highly noticeable academic institution throughout prominent magazines across the US for years. We have also been recognized as an economical choice for a quality education compared to other universities our size and scope. If you desire to go to a place where you're not just a number but treated as a student by all of your professors, then Western is for you. No school will ever be perfect but this is by far the best one that I've experienced. As long as I have breath, the Whee and Tuckasegee Valley will always be my home away from home. It simply "draws" you...

With improved roads, it's not as remote as it used to be but still far enough away to give you a feeling of wide open spaces.
7-11-24 Update: I just spent a few minutes reading some of the most recent reviews.....none good! Has Western really slipped this low?!
Perhaps if you were dropped off here in 1969 240 miles from home not knowing a soul...no phone, no car, no computer, no suitable outdoor gear, no TV and Viet Nam war looking over your shoulder, you might have a different opinion of the place.
Anyway, I hope things get...
Read moreI’m a student here. Would’ve chosen somewhere else in a heartbeat. No A/C in half of the buildings, nowhere to park (and they expect you to pay a $410 parking pass), almost impossible to get food (they’re always out of most items and the lines take 30 minutes at least), and they fine you and nickel and dime you for EVERYTHING. Also, the Chancellor Kelli R. Brown couldn’t care less about you or the other students, none of the leadership ever speaks to students or staff, they stay in their offices and it’s almost impossible to get help from higher-ups when you need it. I’ll likely transfer to another school after this year....
