Revolutsia is one of my favorite places to visit in Wichita. My sons and I are there fairly frequently. When you first arrive, you are greeted by an open area in the middle of the shipping crate stores that features a fire pit, wooden swings, hula hoops and more.
Then there are a variety of stores from which to choose. Each is unique. So far, we’ve loved every one we’ve visited and have several favorites.
However, I’ve done some research on the concept and the people behind it and was surprised and saddened by what I found.
The owner has chosen to, in his own words, focus on young entrepreneurs, women and people of color. So if you’re an older white male with a great idea, you are not welcome to create a business here becasue of your gender and the color of your skin. This, in my opinion, makes him racist and sexist. I personally try not to support companies based on such crude ideals.
The owner also prefers not to provide parking for his shipping crate mall. I’m sure this has saved him a fortune; but it’s interesting that he chose to base this mall in a rather poor neighborhood. In my experience, people in this type of neighborhood will complain amongst themselves about the danger of so much traffic on their streets and the lack of street parking, but they won’t actually necessarily know how to speak out against it. It feels to me that the owner is creating a hostile environment for those who live nearby, merely to save himself money. And he blames Wichitans for not caring to walk very far to get somewhere, but blame shifting doesn’t work well when one is trying to make friends or attract customers.
Martin Luther King Jr. spoke of a day when we would all be judged by the content of our characters rather than the color of our skin. Revolutsia has a long way to go to...
