Absolutely unforgettable experience—standing at the top of Mount Vesuvius and peering into the massive crater is something you’ll never forget. The views stretch from Pompeii to Naples and beyond—breathtaking in every direction.
Get there early if you want to beat the crowds and the afternoon heat. We were the first up at 9:00AM and it was crowd free. On our way back down there were 100’s headed up.
The hike up isn’t technical, but it’s steep, dusty, and fully exposed to the sun. Wear closed-toe shoes (trust me, flip-flops or sandals will wreck your day), and bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and cash.
🚗 Parking tip: The parking situation can be super confusing. You’ll need to purchase an Area B parking pass online (check the URL in your confirmation photos—it’ll direct you to the right site). It assigns you a numbered space, but in reality, no one follows those. We were given spot 100, which was way down the hill. I ended up moving the car closer like everyone else did. Just park near the bus pickup area, even if it’s not your exact number.
🚌 BUS TIP: Bring cash for the shuttle bus to the trailhead—it’s €3 per person and cash only. I recommend having at least €10 on hand, just in case. You do not want to walk that hill on foot—it’s long and steep, and you’ll be wiped out before you even start the actual hike. We saw people who didn’t bring cash start the climb up and I would NOT recommend.
That said, once you’re up there, the views and the history are absolutely worth it. Combine it with Pompeii or Herculaneum, and you’ve got a bucket-list day. Five stars without hesitation!

AMAZING !!
Took the train to Ercolana to visit Herculaneum then grabbed a Vesuvio Tour Bus from the station after. 20 Euros gets you entry to Vesuvius and a return bus ride. You only get 90 minutes up there, but that should be long enough for most people.
If you need longer or want cheaper get an EAV local bus instead. This didn't go from Ercalona ( Herculaneum ) but does go directly from Pompeii entrance / train station. The bus is around 3 euro and entrance to volcano 10 euro.
Do not get a taxi or small tour bus as they don't go to the top car park and you will have to walk a lot further. You can also get a Fiat Panda 4x4 to take you up if unable from here. No idea on cost though.
Even from top car park it's a long hot walk. As others have said, good shoes and a drink are a must! Lots of refreshment stands at various stages of the hike up.
From the top you can see for miles on a clear day. You can check Google for the weather forecast up top as it can be several degrees cooler and you may need an additional layer. Not the day I went though. If it's raining I think all tours are cancelled, it would be a treacherous climb wet.
You can make out Pompeii and with binoculars see the amphitheatre. Sorrento, Naples and the whole of the Napoli bay are breathtaking.
The caldera is awesome to look down into, you can smell sulfur occasionally whilst walking around it.
If your in the area you simply have to do it..

The video says it all. Ever since I first set eyes on the painting by Pierre Jacques Volaire about the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, I have wanted to see the volcano that tragically wiped out the entire civilization of Pompeii.
If you are travelling like I did from Naples, you take the train pass from Circumvesuviana terminal in the Napoli Centrale station. Take the train till Pompeii Scavi Villa Dei Misteri. Please take the tickets to the bus going till Vesuvius bus stand from inside the station. Not from the private companies outside, if you don't want to overspend.
The bus takes you all the way up in about 30-40 minutes to the bus stand. Highly recommend to reserve tickets for going up. The last minute ticket is around 11.80€, plus there are only handful of openings in a particular time slot. There are many people booking last minute, so be quick about it.
The hike up is steep, a little slippery due to the route, so please wear comfortable and sturdy shoes. Take light snacks and water bottles since the stores up their can be pricey.
Up there, you may have a chance to see the daily activity, which may not be clearly visible like Etna, but you can see a little smoke. Be on the lookout for it!

WEAR STOUT SHOES.
Take a tour bus to the entrance - we used Vesuvio Express which picks up outside the Circumvesuviana station and gives you about 2 hours to enjoy the park. If you drive you have another 1 hour's walk in front of you. The walk from the entrance breaks into 6 sections, with the first 4 about 150-200metres long and curving into the next. They are also the steepest. The 5th section is the longest and leads to the first shop. The ground is slippy as it's a gravel path. The last section, around the crater leads to a small cafe at its furthest point, and is mostly rocky, narrow in places and has some steps. Takes about 30-45 mins at a medium steady pace with some stops. Great views across Naples and Sorrento to Capri & Ischia, but despite what you may read, there are No Toilets up Vesuvius- the only facilities are outside the entrance, you need to pay a high price for a drink to use them and they are very poorly maintained.
Absolutely stunning views and a once in a life time trip up an active volcano.
Note: there is very little chance of connectivity at the coach park/entrance so make sure you the right tickets and questions answered before the coach leaves!

The views into the crater and from the top of the volcano are outstanding and definitely worth the trip. The facilities are tricky, though (be warned!): (1) If you have NOT purchased a ticket before, you will have to do so at the entrance ONLINE with your own device (if you have one). There is NO ticket booth or any other option to buy yourself a way in. QR codes are provided and should give you access to a WIFI system and a 3rd party online ticketing service, which entails a lengthy registration process (please have your ID number ready) that will, inter alia, require you to receive text message codes that cannot be properly entered into the website and confirmation emails that don’t even make it to your spam folder. If you succeed and have a chat to the people at the entrance, they will happily tell you that the system is “terrible”.
(2) There are NO toilets at all, so make sure you have organised yourself before accordingly. The paths are neatly fenced off, so alternatives are fairly limited. The various stalls and kiosks sell all sorts of beer and wine, but no diapers.

A Unique Wine Experience at Sorrentino
Sorrentino winery is an exceptional winery located at the foothills of Mount Vesuvius, offering a truly unique wine experience. From the moment I stepped foot on the premises, I was captivated by the charm and character that the vineyard exudes.
The highlight of my visit was undoubtedly the vineyard tour. The knowledgeable staff provided a well-executed tour, sharing fascinating insights into the cultivation and production processes. Exploring the vineyard was a delight, as I witnessed firsthand the care and dedication put into growing the grapes that make their wines so exceptional.
The service at Sorrentino was exemplary. The staff was attentive, ensuring a complete and swift experience. I was particularly impressed by the efficiency of the service, which allowed me to fully enjoy the tour without feeling rushed.
While the restaurant menu could benefit from some improvements, I must commend the outstanding antipasto selection. It was a delightful combination of flavors that left a lasting impression. The starters truly showcased the high-quality ingredients and attention to detail.
The wines I had the pleasure of sampling were nothing short of outstanding. I paired a sparkling wine with a mixed platter of cured meats and cheeses, and the combination was divine. The crisp and refreshing white wine perfectly complemented the fiery pasta all'arrabbiata, enhancing the overall dining experience. The two red wines I tried were exceptional, especially when enjoyed alongside the flavorsome trio of meats in the main course. Although the cheesecake for dessert didn't quite meet my expectations, the staff kindly rectified the situation by offering a slice of their delectable pastiera.
Sorrentino winery is a haven for wine lovers seeking an authentic and memorable experience. With its unique location near Mount Vesuvius and the passion invested in every aspect of their winemaking, it's no wonder their wines stand out. The impeccable service, well-executed vineyard tour, and the overall ambiance make it a destination worth visiting. I highly recommend Sorrentino winery for wine enthusiasts and anyone looking to immerse themselves in the rich heritage of this remarkable winery.

My husband booked this stay because of the proximity to Mt. Vesuvius. Our plan was to hike the mountain and see Pompeii. The weather did not cooperate, but it absolutely did not matter because our unexpected & delightful experience with this Inn, the restaurant, the wine, the walks through the vineyard and the PEOPLE made this an unforgettable memory!!
We traveled by train to Naples and took a taxi to get there. Our driver couldn't find the address and dropped us off at the base of an extremely steep driveway where some shuttle buses were parked. We even called the Inn manager, Raphael, so the driver could get directions, but he just kicked us out of the car and said it was somewhere close by. It felt like we had made a huge mistake. As we dragged our suitcases up the mountainside, past a small group of people walking down, they encouraged us to continue because the people at the top would undoubtedly help us.
The stretch of mountain driveway opened up to a dream world you can't even imagine. The lovely restaurant perched among the sprawling vineyard and our hearts went from sinking to soaring. A gentleman who undoubtedly heard our rolling suitcases over the rocks through the open windows of the restaurant yelled curiously.. Hellooooo! Can I help you?
And before we could even get the words out to explain why we were dragging suitcases across his dreamy patio walkway, he insisted we come around and come in and eat.
He told us to please relax, recover, and enjoy the beginning of our stay because they would take care of us - the winery, the restaurant and the inn were all family and they would see to it that we made it to the inn. But first, EAT!
Our new friend, Umberto, treated us to a five star experience right there on the spot! Wine tastings and several courses (4 I think?) of food. I'm certain he lemon cake is going to be something I can only dream about until we can return one day.
After we finished our 5 star experience, Raphael (the Inn manager) came to pick us up and personally bring us to the Inn.
Thank you to these wonderful people! You turned lemons into Limoncello and my husband and I will never forget you! ❤️

Authentic, wonderful experience and truly delicious wine!
We visited this winery to celebrate my dad's birthday. We had several special wishes to make my dad's day special, which the winery accommodated without any problem and even fully exceeded our expectations. We chose the package WINE TREKKING with a tour through the vineyards to start with - Umberto, who was our guide and sommelier for the day, has provided us with outstanding knowledge about both the vineyard and the wine itself, explained us all the specifications patiently and shared amazing stories with us along the way.
After the tour, we enjoyed delicious lunch and really special tasting. We usually are not particularly big fans of bubbles, but Umberto insisted we trust him - we were happy we did, because for the first time in a long time, we truly loved it and were amazed by the full-body, soft and smooth harmony of their DoRe. All the wines, we tasted in the winery were full-body tasteful wines, with amazing aroma and lasting fresh taste - from whites, our favorite was Latikadea and our all-times favorite was their red wine, Frupa.
Of all wine tastings we took in the previous years during our trips in Italy or abroad, this one was our favorite! Both, white and red wines, all with particular taste and aroma, make you feel the love of people caring for it.
We definitely recommend visiting this winery during your trip, because if you look for a very special and local experience, this is the place to go.
Big thanks also belongs to Umberto, who has been really amazing in making our visit special - thank you!!

Group tour took us here for lunch. There were three pieces of hair in our two plates of food. Cold quiche and cold roasted potatoes, dry bread, cured meats for the first course. When we arrived, the food was already laid out on the plates in a hot dining room in the back. Got a tiny plate of oversalted pasta for main course. Dry cake. 50% of the food in the dining room was left untouched by the guests after eating-- terrible food led to terrible waste
Ladies in our group told me the toilets have no seats!
Before we arrived were told we were getting a 3 course lunch with food made from the property: antipasto with meat cheese, bruschetta, a plate of pasta with local tomatoes for the sauce, and dessert.
We got the cold premade, food mentioned above (topped with hair!), a small portion of over-salted and bad pasta, and a small slice of cake.
They clearly treated the tour groups like second-class customers. The customers sat elsewhere who were not tour groups were given much better treatment and higher quality food, and were sat in cleaner dining areas with white table cloths. Their pasta had cheese on it. It was clear they didn't care about the tour groups, but still tried to sell us wine with a form they put on the tables in between the first and second plates of food.

My wife and I wanted to add something extra to our trip from Rome to Pompeii and found this vineyard during our search. I am so happy we found it. This family owned vineyard was stunning. On the slopes of mighty Mount Vesuvius it overlooked the Bay of Naples and Pompeii below.
The service was outstanding, the family made us feel so welcome and were so accommodating throughout our stay (in the adjacent Vesuvio Inn Bed & Wine Experience, also owned by the family and short walk away). The hotel room was big, clean, and the air conditioning worked wonders!
We were lucky enough to stay during a night in which they hosted another vineyard from near Mount Etna to compare various volcanic wines. So not only did we have the chance to go on a tour of the vineyard and taste the wonderful and unique Lacryma Christi that Sorrentino Vesuvio is known for, but also we tried some other great wines.
On top of all that, we were treated to a phenomenal home cooked meal during the wine tasting.
We spent 10 days in Italy and this was certainly one of the best days on the trip! I highly recommend visiting here if you are a wine lover or are looking something slightly off the beaten path while visiting Naples or Pompeii!

The castle in Ottaviano is a magical place with a unique atmosphere. I loved the variety of stalls offering food, souvenirs, and crafts, but the highlight was the art exhibition. The luminous chair and the wood-and-light sculpture were absolutely mesmerizing! A must-visit spot.
