I've eaten here a few times and have been pleasantly surprised more than not, at least when I ordered platos that weren't noodles or fried rice.
The last time I visited I had roasted pork and although not every morsel was luscious, a lot of them were. It was a simple, ample dish, mostly thin slices of pork, with lots of garlic and ginger.
Today I tried the fried chicken in oyster sauce, and it was even better: Nuggets of white meat enrobed in a simple pale batter and swimming in a brown sauce, not noticeably oyster-y, redolent of ginger and garlic, plus a few shards of bok choy and rings of green onion. Again, very simple and satisfying and fresh. Certainly a lot more honest and successful food than the fake pho at Saigon. 40 pesos cheaper, too.
I asked for salsa picante before I even ordered anything, because picante is how I roll, and the friendly and enthusiastic server, a young Peruvian woman, asked if I might like to try their sweet and sour sauce, too. That turned out to be a good call because the typical green aji sauce I'm used to at Peruvian joints wasn't spicy at all here at Man San. But the agridulce turned out to be a perfect foil for the salt and ginger of the dish, so I dribbled a bit on every bite.
Peruvian chifa features a strong Chinese influence, in case you're wondering, but I couldn't resist getting an order of cancha, too, the original corn nuts, which I love. They came out room temperature, which was disappointing, but it was a big portion so I took some home and shared it.
If you need to escape the ubiquitous burgers of San Telmo, and all the trying-too-hard, compromised cuisines of places like Saigon, this is a better bet than most, and not the least bit cheto. I just wish there weren't two televisions and the radio playing all at the same time. A pleasant enough spot despite that....
