I am not sure if Spanish-speakers use the term "whole in the wall" but if so, El Gauchito is the very definition of that term. What a hidden gem, and it served up - by far - the best empanadas that I tried in Buenos Aires.
To say this is a small place is an understatement. There is one table. That's it. This spot is tucked away on a nondescript street in San Telmo. It has a fairly limited menu of empanadas, locro (a stew), pizza and sandwiches. Make no mistake: go here for the empanadas.
I did try the milanese sandwich - it was a bit dry and not to my liking. But that's OK- because when I tried both the steak and the onion/cheese empanadas, I thought I was in heaven and forgot all about the sandwich. They were served with a homemade sauce that is similar to chimichurri.
Thanks to the man who serves you here. He's old-school but extraordinarily patient. And the prices! You can get 12 empanadas for under 24,000 pesos (about $24 USD) - enough for four people to eat!
Come here - you will not regret it!!
Ven aquí, no te...
Read moreExcellent empanadas, north Argentine style. This is your basic "hole in wall," but what a surprise. The decor couldn't be more "porteño" (typical Buenos Aires). Don't expect anything fancy. This is for Argentines on the go: a quick frugal lunch (empanadas of your choice, a soft drink, a beer or a cup of wine). The place is really small (one table that sits three and limited counter space, and of course, you can sit outside in one of the two tables for four. Therefore, most of the orders are to go. This is a great place to get to know how the Argentines really go about their...
Read moreThis place is great. It is a small restaurant/street food place with just a few small tables outside on the sidewalk, and the Empanadas here are great. But even more importantly, the owner is seems to be a really kind, open person. The first time we were here, we ordered our Empanadas to go when still a bit insecure with our Spanish, and the whole time we were waiting he and another guest really made an effort talking to us and getting to know each other a tiny bit. We felt warmly welcome there and are guaranteed to come back, both for the delicious food and the...
