Fogón Asado – Buenos Aires

From the outside, Fogón almost looks closed — like a hidden, secret location only accessible to those who know where to look. But once you open the door, everything changes. You're welcomed by Perugia, a charming and attentive host who sets the tone for what is clearly a carefully curated experience.

To the right, there’s a private dining room that seats around 10 guests — this is where the chef’s counter takes place, the restaurant’s most exclusive dining option. Here, guests are served a 14-course tasting menu, with the option of adding a wine pairing for around $80 USD. The wine selection features high-quality, thoughtfully chosen labels and comes with approximately five glasses (with generous refills at the staff’s discretion). If you’re even slightly interested in wine, the pairing is highly recommended.

The dishes are creative and rooted in Argentine flavors, presented in a minimalist style. Some plates stand out more than others, but the overall quality — especially of the prawns and meat — is consistently high. Service is excellent, with two chefs and one waiter managing the room with professionalism and warmth.

It’s important to note that the lack of privacy is part of the experience — you’re seated very close to other diners, which can be either intimate or intrusive, depending on your preferences.

The dinner ends on a high note with a memorable dessert: pancakes filled with dulce de leche, stamped with a hot branding iron, served with sweet cream and berries.

The full experience costs around $120–130 USD for food, plus an additional $80 USD for wine. It’s clearly designed for an international crowd, particularly North American tourists accustomed to fine dining prices.

One drawback worth mentioning is the overly direct request for a tip. A pre-printed tipping sheet is placed on a plate at the end of the meal — likely because payment is made in full in advance at the time of booking. While this might be standard for American guests used to tipping 15–20%, it may feel inappropriate or even awkward for South American or European visitors, especially considering the already high cost relative to typical Argentine dining, where a good steak dinner usually costs about $30 USD.

Overall, Fogón offers a unique and captivating dining experience with excellent service, quality ingredients, and thoughtful wine pairings. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a special culinary evening — provided you're ready for the steep price tag and don’t mind sharing close quarters with...

Overall, an earnest and enjoyable experience if you understand what this is, and what it is not.

It’s not the showcase of a hip Argentine chef redefining the culinary landscape of Buenos Aires, although they are not afraid to remix the tradition of Asado with upscale, modern sensibilities. Rather, this is a carefully planned culinary excursion from a company that understands experiential tourism and the power of food and dining as a proxy for culture. (Same founder as The Argentine Experience and Sherpa Food Tours.) As such, you will have an opportunity to learn about cuts of meat, cooking styles and Argentine customs in an intimate, bilingual setting. But your mileage may vary on the educational component: as it is a fairly scripted evening, some staff struggled with questions that veered too far from the programmed dialogue.

That said, service is personal and excellent; that much remains from the archetype of a high-end tasting. The setting too: lighting and atmosphere are immaculate, though you’re especially close to your neighbors if the space is full and there’s a rather out-of-place mess of an office in the back corner of the space.

The food is good, though unevenly paced. This is because a majority of the meal revolves around the preparation a few large pieces of meat (namely, a ribeye and its derivatives), and it all finishes around the same time. This means that you begin with some lighter bites and long pauses, and then the meat piles up at the end. An instant crowd-favorite was the miso-marinated asado, which speaks to the inevitable conclusion of a modern Argentine meal centered around barbecued meat: the most exciting flavors are global.

Much of the accompaniments are ready and waiting to plate around the meat, so I can’t emphasize enough that it’s all about the barbecue. And don’t worry about leaving hungry, because in addition to your plated food, staff walk around with surplus cuts. You’ll also leave with some seasonings to make chimichurri at home, a nice callback to the first moments of the meal when you...

Absolutely exceptional experience in Buenos Aires!

We wanted meat, great wine & an experience: all three items where ticked off our bucket list from our visit at Fogon Asado.

From the moment of arrival, service is impeccable. The team are a well-oiled machine of passionate chefs and hosts who generally look to enjoy their time. The dishes are served at a great pace, we never found ourselves "waiting" for our next coure. The meat and dishes are delicious! Tasty, thought out and excellent portions. The wine is of high quality, and compliments each dish perfectly.

It was an exceptional evening of fire, excellent food, exceptional service and delicious wine. It became the highlight of our time im Buenos Aires and we cannot recommend it enought!

Some tips for future guests:

It gets hot inside the restaurant with the central fire, dress accordingly. We had jerseys on as it was a cold winter night, but once inside, it is warm and toasty and you will want to take off a layer.

Take cash to tip. The service is great but it is cash only

Come hungry. The courses are of great portion size and delicious- you will want to eat it all!

You will leave smelling of smoke, guaranteed 🤣 It is an intimate experience and they cook your meat in front of you, so keep this mind as we definitely had to wash our clothes the next day as there was no way we could pack them into our suitcases like that :)

Go slow on the wine. They are not shy when it comes to topping up your glass (which we loved as they show so much value for money), but with this, you can get tipsy very quickly :) It is delicious and exceptional wine, you will want to enjoy each course/pairing

The welcome drink and activity (I will keep this a suprise as we didn't expect it and it is such a great touch to the experience) is wonderful

Boom your spot! Enjoy it!

1000000% worth the experience. What an incredible gem of a restaurant and experience, so happy we experienced this during our time in...
