Black Tote Parrilla — Restaurant in Municipio de Cafayate

Away from the plaza is the unassuming Black Tote Parrrilla. I’m welcomed in and seated at a table close to where three musicians are tuning their instruments and preparing their performance. My first ‘live’ viewing of Argentinian folk music. As I attempt to google translate my way through the menu, I’m approached by my waiter who speaks English and assists with my selection. He recommends a scotch fillet so I follow his advice and add a mixed salad plus order 500mm of house red wine and a water. Later, when the bill arrives, I’m delightfully surprised to see that the vino is only 600 pesos more than the water. “Cubierto” or house bread with a spicy dipping sauce plus some bean type salsa is FOC. A nice touch compared to other places that charge a nominal amount for such service. The steak is delicious, slightly overcooked to what I ordered, (an on going happening since I’ve been in Argentina) but the tastiest of the four steaks of eaten in Argentina in my ten days of travel. The simple salad is fresh and comes with oil and balsamic for my addition. Then, the music begins. Two guitarists and on violinist. They could be a family as the lead guitarist and singer looks like he could be the father of the two teenage musicians either side of him. We loved it here! The staff is very friendly and tried their best to communicate with us even if our Spanish is not the best. We ordered the Parrillada Completa, which is basically a big heap of all kinds of meat served on a mini table grill. It included sausage, blood sausage, intestine meat, brisket, baby ribs, etc. It was delicious!! (Make sure to ask how you want your meat (medium rare etc) because they don’t always ask you that in Argentina.) For dessert we had the red fruits cheesecake; delicious as well! The quality of the food is very good for the low prices that they ask (in contrary to the main square where you pay a lot for bad food…). Visitamos esta parrillada por recomendación del recepcionista del hotel donde nos hospedamos. La experiencia fue mixta, y aquí detallo los aspectos positivos y negativos de nuestra visita.

Aspectos positivos: Atención: La atención fue excelente desde el primer momento. Fueron rápidos para recibirnos, traer la carta y tomar los pedidos. Los platos llegaron sin demoras. Servicio: Pedimos milanesas napolitanas, matambre napolitano y una parrillada completa. A pesar de no querer morcilla ni riñón, los retiraron sin problema (aunque no ofrecieron reemplazos). Guarnición: La ensalada rusa que acompañaba las milanesas estaba deliciosa. Costo: Buenos precios en general. No cobran cubiertos, aunque sí cobran aderezos (mayonesa, ketchup).

Aspectos negativos: Calidad de la comida: Quien pidió parrillada completa encontró un trozo de carne con un sabor desagradable, lo cual fue mencionado al mozo, quien se limitó a reír. Debimos devolver una milanesa napolitana debido al mal sabor de la carne. Flexibilidad: No permiten cambios en la parrillada, lo cual puede ser inconveniente si no deseas ciertos cortes. Porciones: Nos indicaron que la parrillada completa era para 2 a 3 personas, pero en nuestro caso solo alcanzó para una persona. Postres: No probamos los postres, así que no puedo opinar al respecto.
