My weekly treat is to go out for breakfast on Friday mornings, having fasted on the day before. The Duthy Street Deli is an unpretentious and welcoming venue run by its owners who are friendly and attentive. The Big Breakfast consists of: two eggs ( I have them soft-poached) on wedges of toast; two hash browns; a lot of bacon; grilled tomatoes; spinach; chorizo (if you like); and a very generous portion of mushrooms.
Having been there several times now, I have had to ask them to cut back on the bacon and mushrooms -- after all, enough is as good as a feast -- and a feast its is! The standard of preparation and presentation is hearty and homely. Might I suggest the choice from some sauces as an accompaniment?
If that wasn't enough, there are good tables outside where you can sit undisturbed and write your diary. Or you may choose to sit inside at a large table with a group of friends on a regular get-together. It's the sort of place that is never crowded or noisy and yet you may gather snippets of conversations ranging from mountain views in Umbria to a bus trip in Baltimore like I did this morning.
I'd like to preserve The Duthy Street Deli with all of its comforts, lack of pretention and wholesome, generous fare. Sadly the wave of crowds shouting at one another from fashionable metal chairs is sweeping over the suburbs.
Long may Duthy Street Deli prosper, I say on Friday...
Read moreWhat a gem. First time visiting today on a sunny Sunday and I can’t believe I’ve never been here. Such a lovely atmosphere in the deli style cafe, and we were so warmly greeted by the staff as soon as we walked through the door. The menu had a great selection of breakfast and lunch options, as well as treats on display. I tried the bangers and mash special with an oat cappuccino. The coffee hit the spot, the cappuccino was delicious and was actually covered in chocolate! (Rare to see in the age of latte art which has killed the humble cappuccino!) The bangers and mash were so flavourful, I was actually not expecting such a simple dish to be packed with so much flavour. The pork and apple sausages were so tender, and the mash was so creamy. Not to mention they are open til 4 on weekends! So good for a lazy Sunday when everything else insists on closing at 2. All up per person we spent under $30 for a satisfying meal and great coffee. You can tell it is made with love. Duthy Street Deli truly is one of those gems, all the best things about a cafe rolled into one. Such an unpretentious and content place to...
Read moreWaitress was incredibly impolite and can’t spell the word “porridge” and refused to bother to look at her scrawled incorrectly written mistake before reacting in the most inappropriate and childish manner. Not only did I preorder and had to wait 30 minutes. It was expensive and extra on top for public holiday (both the time and money I can comprehend as a fair deal for small business) but in saying that the female cafe worker was abhorrent and had no customer service skills or was able to be friendly when pointed out an embarrassing spelling mistake she had made. Recommend discussing customer service being what drives a small business, just because someone who is waiting might not look like a high income earner or high class person doesn’t mean that you can be so easily bickering when you are not in a position to take $35 for two coffees and then turn around and be absolutely impolite when it was certain you needed it pointed out. What a silly way to treat paying customers with...
