The atmosphere felt alive. Bright colours, upbeat music, and the kind of buzz that makes you smile before you have even sat down. The vibe was light, and it is clear that Hola Amigos wants you to enjoy yourself. That energy carries through the space with ease.
I ordered the fish burrito, which came wrapped in a beautifully toasted tortilla that added a lovely warmth and bite to each mouthful. The fish itself was balanced nicely with the rice and salsa, and the pickled veg on top was, for me, the highlight. It added a bright, tangy pop that I wanted more of. In fact, if that same pickled crunch had been woven throughout the entire burrito, with a squeeze of lime and guacamole, this would have been a knock out dish.
Instead of lime, lemon was used, which softened the sharpness that lime brings. Lime has a way of lifting those rich Mexican flavours and would have paired beautifully with the rice. The guacamole was fresh and well made, but I would love to see it included in the main dishes rather than an extra side to purchase. When your ingredients are that good, they deserve a place at the centre.
The nachos hit a good balance. Nothing too heavy, just layered well and seasoned right. Guacamole was again purchased as an extra, and while it was delicious, these are the kinds of ingredients that should be showcased. With another Mexican food chain restaurant next door, it is small additions like this that could make all the difference.
We also ordered margaritas, which had potential, but the use of lemon over lime made them feel a little muted. A small detail, but worth noting. No matter the cost of limes, they make the drink. That sharp citrus twist is what defines a margarita, and it is worth leaning into.
A small, moment we could not help but notice was when one of the bartenders shook a cocktail below the bar. From where we were sitting, all we could see were a pair of concentrating eyes and arms moving up and down. It gave us a giggle. It was all in good humour, but a lift of the shaker over the shoulder or above the bar would add a little theatre to the moment and really bring the fun side of the bar to life.
All that said, this is a place with heart. You can feel the effort, the joy, and the desire to become a local go to. The team is friendly, the vibe is easy, and there is already a lot here that works. With just a few thoughtful tweaks to highlight the best parts of their dishes, and a firm commitment to the power of lime, I have no doubt Hola Amigos will become something special...
Read moreHola Amigo's was something new for lunch. A step up from Zombrero's with a colourful twist and atmosphere the second you walk in the Tex Mex vibed cantina.
The store looked clean, well lit and houses a few isles of tables and chairs. There is plenty of room for larger groups and people on wheelchairs. The atmosphere was lovely, happy Latin fused music gave it a really authentic Mexican Cantina vibe.
It wasn't busy pre lunch, the waiter at the bar greeted us as we looked at the menu. We ordered the Classic Chicken Burito and the Nachos.
The food took about 30 minutes to arrange, surprisingly slow as it wasn't busy at all with only 2 tables. But when our meals arrived they looked pretty good! Very street style with interesting twist on some beetroot strands on top of my burito. And 2 random stale corn chips on ths side, a wedge of lemon for presentation.
The Chicken burito was good! However, lacking the right meat to rice, to beans ratio = hardly any chicken in mine and it wasn't really cooked throughout, still chewy. I would have loved seeing sour cream, avocado and spring onion sides to compliment the dishes. The black eyed peas were something different from red kidney beans, but the salsa inside was pretty nice! Ordered not spicy - yet there was enough to make it spicy! I'm glad i didn't get mild spicy, otherwise my tongue would have been on fire!
Definitely worth going there again, might try something different next time.
Nachos did not come with avocado or sour cream by the looks of things, which was pretty disappointing to see ~ Authentic Mexican? No - this is a Texas/Mexican fusion. Still pleasant, but staff might need to speak up and be a little keen on customer service, the environment needs bubbly out going and vocal staff. Mumbling about the menu isn't going to solve awkwardness. Otherwise, lovely service.. just needs that...
