Steak & Caramelized Onion Pie $6.20
My #fridaypieday adventure kept on going. I Visited The Semaphore Bakehouse and on recommendation I got the Steak & Caramelized Onion Pie.
Now I've had a few of these thicker base and side type of pies and I am going to go out on a limb and start reviewing them as a category of their own. Some may prefer this type of pastry, some may not, but a thin pastry compared to a thicker type of pastry is worlds apart. The presentation of the pie looked really good and was of a decent size. I was impressed. The lid had a nice golden look to it. Baked perfectly and wasn't flakey. The base and side were of the thicker variety, I wouldn't say they were dry, had a nice bit of crunch while eating the pie. The filling was delicious, you could definitely taste the caramelized onion throughout the pie. Shredded steak with a bit of mince to balance it out. The gravy was delicious, wasn't too rich in flavour, you could still taste the sweetness of the onion. The meat to gravy ratio was perfect, packed full of goodness. The flavours worked really well together. The serving temp was spot on and the pie held up together. All in all a pretty good pie. Thanks Adam 👍

Read morePassing through Adelaide on my way through to Perth, I stayed at the Largs Pier Hotel near Semaphore on the beach. If you ever stay in Adelaide, I recommend the Semaphore area as it is a really nice beach side suburb with a lot to offer. The Souvlaki/yeros shop does a great souvlaki too. I was up early to point my way to Perth and the only thing open in Semaphore was the Semaphore Bakehouse. This is an old school bakery so don’t expect any brisket jalapeno type pies. As such, I selected the steak bacon and cheese which I think was a recent addition as it was added in texta on the overhead menu board. Reviews are mixed on Google so I did not have high expectations. Therefore I was pleasantly surprised. The pastry was spot on and I rated it 8/10. The filling was quite good. The bacon was the square cubed type but there was visible cheese and I was not dissatisfied with the taste. It was not great but also not bad. 7/10 At $6.00 for a 254g pie, this was great value 9/10 As an aside, I now travel with a thermometer as well as a set of scales. The temp of this pie was 66 degrees which is quite hot but at the upper limit of what I can still scoff without waiting. It seems the average is 62 degrees. I give this pie a solid...
Read moreI went to Semaphore Bakehouse today for the first time in probably 12 months. It must have changed hands. Nothing like it used to be. Pie was not fresh at all. Cake displays only half full with many favourites not available anymore. Very disapointing I wont be going back
22/10/24 Update. Well anyone deserves a second chance. NOT THIS PLACE . Just bought a pie that clearly been in the warmer for a few days. Totally inedible, so dry and what I did try to eat has made me ill. Cake selection is very dismal. As a bakery they would make a fine...
