Katsumoto ('Victorious' in Japanese) is a fantastic spot for a quick lunchtime bite, or if you've got time on your hands, a great sit down meal. Dishes come quickly and food is generally good quality. The 'meal sets' are incredible value, which include, miso soup, pickles, potato salad, a bowl of rice and the main meal. Dishes such as Hiyaki Chu-ka - a cold summer noodle dish is something you don't find everywhere and is a favourite, even though the recipe has been changed and I believe is more Chinese than Japanese. Since the new owners took over some years ago, the menu has been slightly 'Chinafied' from the original Japanese owners, however, they have expanded the menu for the better and the choices are excellent, with genuine Japanese flavours shining through. Staff can be a little offhand and seemingly hurried for no reason, but this may be a cultural thing for efficient customer service.
If you're in Rundle Mall, Katsumoto is worth a visit. You won't be disappointed.

During our visit, we enjoyed a delightful spread that included Vegetable Gyoza, Yakitori, Potato Korokke, the Tori-Teriyaki Katsumoto Bento, Karaage Chicken, Original Tonkotsu Ramen, and the Tori-Teriyaki Don Set. Every dish was flavorful and well-prepared.
The Traditional Japanese Green Tea served in a teapot added a charming touch, and the Cream Daifuku was the perfect sweet finish to an incredible meal.
Service was outstanding—staff were friendly, polite, and offered great recommendations. There is plenty of seating available.
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and highly recommend Katsumoto to anyone seeking a genuine Japanese dining experience. We’ll definitely be...
Read moreI didn't go into the shop so I cant comment on the service or atmosphere in itself. The food however, based off of what I was given, was abysmal. I ordered the pork katsu Don, the Katsu sando, and the croquettes. the Katsu Don was extremely unpleasant in both presentation and taste. Toxic Green coloured pickled vegetables on top. Soggy, pale and tough pork katsu on top and over cooked egg on rice. the croquettes were pretty mediocre but all together inoffensive. they were slightly clumpy but a god send compared to some of the other dishes. the most insulting by far was the Katsu sando, selling for $14.80. the same pale, soggy, flavourless pork katsu as with the Don. way too much mayonnaise, as well as soggy, thin, untoasted BREAD carelessly placed in the takeaway container. what a joke. I would be seriously ashamed if this is what I was charging...
