Lenox Avenue Blackwood seemed to have good reviews; but on reflection, it's not clear why. Perhaps it holds special appeal to the "younger set". Who knows.
Certainly, the dimmed ambience, dark or faux-brick walls and dark, simple furniture, was attractive with a coffee shop atmosphere. The menu was cafe style: limited but interesting and with potential.
Sadly, that's where the positives ran out.
My wife ordered a $26 "Salmon Salad" which purported to be "Grilled Atlantic salmon, whipped chipotle & cashew, coriander, cumin, roasted sweet potato, currants, cucumber, savoy cabbage and sweet corn". She later amended the order to Barramundi when told the Salmon had run out. In the event, the menu description should have been reversed in accordance with the normal practice for food ingredients! The savoy cabbage totally dominated the dish, and a microscope was needed to find evidence of fish! I didn't bother to photograph it; a bowel of cabbage holds little attraction.
I ordered the $22 "Smash Burger" - "Smashed beef pattie, cheese, lettuce, pickled, tomato, burnt butter & eschallot sauce". It came with complementary McDonalds' style French Fries. The burger was a great disappointment - like a sad reality when compared with a "dressed up", well-presented photograph of food. Despite having TWO "smashed" beef patties, the burger was appallingly presented, surprisingly small and tasteless.
Overall, the food was exceedingly disappointing. But there was more! The music was too loud for a normal conversation - although I'm sure the young staff and the young patrons who write the reviews wouldn't mind as they surfed the net on their ever present Androids or iPhones.
Finally, let me not forget the two extremely dirty glasses delivered with a jug of water. I was gobsmacked that the staff had the audacity to drop two grubby glasses in front of us without noticing!
All in all, there are other cafes in Blackwood. Don't...
Read moreDisappointing! Corey, Head Chef at Lenox Ave.... not because of your food but your attitude. As a table of 3 covers, we walked in to our local Blackwood Cafe today (Sunday), quickly followed by a couple wanting to dine as well. The time on the website, menu and front window indicates open until 3.30 pm. When we sat down, we were told we had 6 minutes to order food as the kitchen closes at 2.30pm. That was reasonable, but should be mentioned on the website. An associate of Head Chef Corey walked over to the pass and that's when Corey thought it appropriate to tell him he couldn't meet up as "apparently we have a load of customers who've just walked in." This was said loudly through the open pass in earshot of the paying customers. The server promptly apologised, but by then, the rudeness from Corey had left a sour taste. We proceeded to order an alcoholic drink but unfortunately the server was unable to fulfil this as she did not have her RSA, which was disappointing. As someone who's been in the industry for 35 years, I appreciate early finishes, but you are in the business of customer service and reputation counts. With plenty of other options in Blackwood, we...
Read moreWe received our food after an hour of waiting and it was cold. Not slightly cold but stone cold. The lady taking orders and making Coffee was slammed, same as the one cook in the kitchen.
We went in at 1pm on a Sunday and there were only 2 people working and only 2 or 3 tables free. The lady serving was very apologetic to us and did give us a refund. The cook was blaming the lady serving when it wasn’t her fault. The cook then tried saying our food was meant to be cold when it definitely wasn’t. I think if they had the right amount of staff on a Sunday lunch service I don’t think they would have had any of these issues.
The coffee was good and the lady was very polite but we couldn’t eat our food so very poor.
I’ve just read the reply from Lennox of this review and it’s a complete lie. There were at least 3 orders for food after us and we left at 3pm about 5 minutes after our order came out. We waited 25 minutes for a sprite because the girl serving was slammed.
I don’t like to leave bad reviews but this needed one. The reason we came here was because we had a nice lunch at their restaurant on Rundle Street in the city. Unfortunately we...
