Shocking, shocking, shocking lack of professionalism!

Mother's Day Lunch but the mother in the group did not get any lunch!

Her main course did not arrive! The other main courses arrived and were eaten....we asked where the missing main course was? We assumed that it had not been written down by the waiter and therefore not prepared by the chef in the kitchen. (However, the waiter claimed that it was the fault of the printer.) Really?

Our Mother's Day outing was totally ruined!

We also ordered 2 entrees that didn't arrive. So, in total there were 3 items that did not arrive at our table.

The place was totally overbooked and under staffed. Many other tables were also just sitting and waiting. When we first arrived we were seated outside with our table butting up to the windows as if we were part of another table (as mentioned in previous reviews, so the management is clearly not open to feedback.)After waiting and waiting to have our order taken we had to wave at a waiter to eventually get our order taken.

Then, another very long wait for any food to arrive. After about 2 hours one main course arrived and was eaten. Then when this was finished another main course arrived. At this point we asked about the missing main course and entrees. We had to explain 3-4 times that there were items that we had ordered that had not arrived.

Adding to the situation was the fact that the waiting staff appeared to be untrained and absolutely hopeless: There was a very, very young boy waiter (who looked like a child) who was very annoying with his ongoing inappropriate comments. There was also an older waiter who was out of his depth, and at no point did any senior management attempt to apologise to us.

We then left the restaurant with one member of our group ( the mother) having only had a couple of mouthfuls of food. We paid for the meal, but felt very aggrieved about what should have been a wonderful and happy day for our family, instead turned out to be a disappointing and frustrating disaster.

It was in fact, our very worst dining experience in Adelaide ever!

PS They couldn't keep up with the service...but did I mention that someone came in and they took his take away order! He walked out with his order in a paper carry bag. In the meantime,we just kept on waiting...

Well... where to start. Booked for my wife's 47th Birthday and noted that in the comments section on the booking form. Booked for 4 at 7.00pm. Arrived and entered into what honestly looked like a Sushi Train in regards to decor. Classy this restaurant is not! So many tables of uncleared food, dirty floor and most telling - really badly ripped vinyl chairs. Every second chair looked like this. Im like - "We are in trouble here". Floor manager approached us and I advised our booking name - she directed us to a table with a 3 place setting. We went there and had to grab a chair from another table. The floor manager came over and I confirmed that we were a 4 person booking and checked she had the right booking name. She did and then went and grabbed a another place setting and gave us the menus. We then waited about 20 mins before she returned to take our order, whilst people who arrived after us had already had their orders taken. I was hoping to order a drink up front, but had to wait till our food orders were being taken. Very thirsty for a nice lager on a hot night! Eventually we ordered - 2 serves Prawn and Pork Gyoza, Salmon and Avocado Sushi roll, Chicken Teriyaki Sushi Roll, Katsu Chicken, Teriyaki Chicken and Sweet Soy Beef with 2 serves rice. Gyoza were lacking flavour and felt very grainy. The filling hadn't come together well. The bottoms were burnt. Salmon Sushi roll was fine - the type of quality you get at any sushi train. Nothing amazing - Nothing terrible. However not served with any soy sauce or wasabi? Certainly a staple requirement for this dish? We had to get up and ask for this. Katsu Chicken whilst flavourful, was very small for the $26 price tag. It was one small breast. Teriyaki Chicken - the pick of the bunch - best dish we had - but nothing that I would write home about. Just the best that we had that night. Sweet Soy Beef - The beef appeared to have been broiled rather than stir fried and had a very wet and rubbery consistency. And finally - no acknowledgement of my wifes birthday. Left the restaurant very dissatisfied and upset that my wife had not got the lovely experience we had been hoping for

EDIT - Owner just messaged and invited us back with a $50 voucher. Fair play - we will give it...

Visited for dinner with my family (2A 3C). Will break down my review into categories:

Food - food was delicious. Fresh and authentic (I have lived in Japan). Huge variety! What we tasted was delicious and well cooked and presented.

Drinks - extensive menu and the sake we had was well priced and very pleasant and enjoyable

Service - unfortunately this was not so good. We sat for AGES waiting for someone to take our order....any order...no one came to ask if we wanted drinks or food. By the time someone came (after I put my hand up and indicated we were ready - at this point we had been waiting 15mins easily) we knew our entire drinks and food order. Obviously this was too much for the lady taking our order so no drinks came out despite food arriving fairly promptly after about 10mins. We asked for our drinks again....and then got asked what drinks we had ordered and had to replace our drink order. It was nice though that we got an extra piece of aburi salmon from the kitchen which was maybe a small apology for the lack of service or possibly just that they were closing and had a bit left over...either way it helped to pick up our spirits after having to chase the wait staff for service.

Price - we found it surprisingly pricey. I know Japanese food often is but based on Google reviews, we thought it would be quite affordable. But I would say it's fairly comparative with other fine dining Japanese restaurants across Adelaide. So not expensive in comparison to other places but more expensive than what Google reviews indicates. 😊 we had 3 kids and 2 adults and spent around 140 and that included a few plates of sushi, a couple plates of starter share plates and 2 main meals with some serves of rice and a small...

Everything was just delightful! I just went with mum for lunch having heard of it's opening a few weeks ago, and even early on in the piece they have their formula nailed. The batter on the tempura was light and crispy so the sweetness of the South Aussie prawns could really shine. The takoyaki took me back to Osaka (the 34°C outside less so!) and the sauce with the gyoza was lovely and loaded with sesame. The sashimi, I think, speaks of their philosophy. We'd originally ordered tuna, but they had run out and instead offered us the salmon. At the time I wondered why not just go to the supermarket over the road, but when the salmon came out, I understood. The salmon, mum reckons, is the best salmon sashimi she's ever had. It was so buttery it just melted, very, very well-sourced. Supermarket tuna would not have stacked up. If they can't get the best stuff, they won't serve it, which I think sets Yuki in the Hills up for a great future. There's a lovely selection of saké, not overwhelming but enough to give you choice, and staff who know how to recommend it. Also plenty of Japanese beers and softies (including calpis! I haven't seen that since I was in Japan!) The staff is friendly, informative, very welcoming and clearly all so passionate about their restaurant. I'm a Hills local myself, but I promise it's worth the trip up (seriously guys it only takes 7 minutes up the freeway. Branch out!)

This is a very authentic Japanese restaurant, which has a nice vibe in the Hills setting. The staff was so polite and attentive. Their customer service was excellent. Food was nice and well presented as well. We tried their okonomiyaki (Japanese pancake) and it was so lovely, just melted in the mouth. Would definitely come back for okonomiyaki at some point. The miso duck breast was amazing as well - very tender and tasty. The only thing that confused us was the bao buns and veggies (steamed bok choy) served together with the duck breast. Steamed bok choy was a bit overly soft (oversteamed) and both baos and bok choy seemed to be another separated dish instead of together with the duck breast forming one unique dish. If they would still like to serve duck breast with veggies and bao buns, I would recommend they change the name of the dish from ‘miso duck breast’ to ‘miso duck breast baos’ and replace the soft and steamy bok choy with more crispy veggies. They could also make complete baos (with duck and veggies and dressing inside) in the kitchen before bringing them to customers. Portion is a bit small too, so the meal was a bit pricey. However, a great experience overall. We would come back for okonomiyaki and would try other dishes, particularly ramen.

Unseasoned, unappetising and unappealing. Yuki in the hills came highly recommended from Google reviews and we had tall expectations, however upon finishing our meal we couldn't have been less impressed. Firstly the staff - not terrible, but forgetful and not particularly attentive. The service - expect to wait hours for food. We ordered two appetisers and two mains on a mildy busy night. We waited close to two hours for everything, but the real kicker was that our food was fast - gyoza, karage, ramen and tofu. Nothing that would take more than 10 minutes to make. Lastly the food - irredeemable. Karage was powdery, unseasoned and lacked any flavour at all. Gyoza were simultaneously oily with a filling that was an unpleasantly mealy and also lacked flavour. Tonkotsu ramen was spectacularly bad - broth had no flavour and zero seasoning, noodles were shop bought from frozen and awful. Teriyaki tofu tasted shop bought, steamed rice was dry and miso soup once again had absolutely no flavour. All in all, an experience I will never repeat and I truly hope that you've decided to eat elsewhere tonight. Thank me later.
