Degani Calamvale Cafe & Gelato — Restaurant in Brisbane City

Had the big breakfast here this morning. The place can be quite crowded even first thing on a Sunday morning. I eventually found a seat outside at a very wobbly table. Service was cheerful and fast. The bacon, which was described on the menu as 'crispy', was, in fact, anything but. When I brought this to the attention of one of the servers, they cheerfully agreed that it was not satisfactory and offered to correct it. After a short wait, my meal was returned to me, and though the bacon was somewhat improved, it still was not truly crispy. I chose to ignore this and commenced eating. The tomato was of poor quality, pale and mostly flavourless, and had been grilled for only the briefest time (the skin was still clinging strongly and no attempt had been made to remove it). The mushrooms were not correctly browned and, as a result, were watery and lacking in flavour. The hash browns were of the small triangular frozen variety but were, at least, well cooked. The eggs were poached as requested and quite satisfactory (whites well set with yolks creamy and somewhat liquid). The cheese kransky was split and grilled on the split surfaces in the fashion I prefer but was extremely salty and contained a not inconsiderable amount of gristle. My iced chai contained very little chai with most of the cup being occupied by cream and ice-cream. The juice I ordered was of good quality and flavour, though lacking in volume due to more than two-thirds of the cup being ice cubes. All in all, it was a fairly ordinary experience and one in which the quality and quantity received fell far short of the price paid ($40+). My wife and I visited Degani today for a cuppa and quick bite to eat. We both ordered the smashed avo - 2 pieces of toasted sour dough, generously smeared with avo and topped with sun dried tomatoes and feta. On the side was a handful of rocket with a wedge of lime, salted. I decided to throw in two poached eggs with mine, which increased the price by about $4. Even then, both meals were reasonably priced.

The meals arrived very quickly, as did our drinks. My wife opted for a flat white while I chose the lemon grass and ginger tea (bag tea sold, not loose leaf). My wife, who can be fussy with coffee, enjoyed her cuppa while I also liked my tea.

My only criticism is that I selected soft poached eggs when asked (soft or hard), yet the egg white was very firm and the yolk itself was also quite cooked, with only a hint of moisture. However, I am acutely aware that poaching an egg is like juggling and most don't do it well. Although not ideal, it didn't spoil my meal and I still enjoyed the total package.

As for the actual establishment and staff, everything was great. The store has a clean and professional layout, and plenty of meal and treat options available. The staff were friendly and, as previously mentioned, had our drinks and meals served in under 10 minutes.

Not even worthy of 1 star. Ordered for take away and got $60 worth of food. Banana Pancakes, Big Breakfast and Eggs Benedict and sweet potato fries. The banana pancakes had no banana at all and said it came with cream and ice cream didn't get any of that, got strawberries which I am allergic too which also is not advertised to come with on the menu. The big breakfast had 1 tiny piece of soaky toast but it was okay to all the rest. The eggs Benedict had hardly any hollandaise sauce, an greatful though as it tatsted like straight butter. Was disgusting! The Turkish toast was just standard bread you'd buy from Woolworths or Coles and it tasted as though it was stale. And lastly the sweet potato fries were horrific! They were so soaky and put in a plastic container with a lid which that should never happen, it should be put in a breathe able container, they charged me $3 for aioli which I did not receive either! I would not recommend Deganis to anybody!! Poor food and poor service. I rang to try and sort out the issue but they just kept saying 'oh' and that they were getting a manager then just hung up on me.. And being late pregnant the last thing I want to do is get back into the car and try and sort out my meal. Absolutely appalled with the food and service, DO NOT...
