The Barra Boys — Restaurant in Brisbane City

Based on my experience, the standout feature of this shop was the cooking of the fish. I ordered the barramundi, which was beautifully cooked—flaky, juicy, and one of the best I’ve had. The chips were also excellent: crisp, golden, and very satisfying.

However, a few aspects fell short. The Greek salad appeared a bit aged, lacking freshness, and while the coleslaw was crunchy, its dressing was thin and watery, resulting in minimal flavour. Additionally, the sauces seemed store-bought rather than house-made— a missed opportunity, as homemade condiments often elevate the experience at quality fish and chip shops.

Portion size was another concern. As shown in the attached photo, the serving appeared to be half of a fillet, which felt rather modest given the $31 price tag. A more generous portion would provide better value for money.

Overall, I would return for the outstanding fish if the portion sizes, salads, and sauces improve.

It cost me around $35 for chips, grilled fish, salad and added aioli. Which is a good price if I received a whole fillet of fish, and good salad.

Edit: After reviewing other reviews. I confirm that they only gave me half a fillet which isn’t listed on the menu. Other photos of barramundi show the entire fillet, whereas mine is literally...

“I’ve been a loyal fan of The Barra Boys, having enjoyed their fish and chips on numerous occasions, so I was excited to bring my partner along to share the experience. Unfortunately, this visit was a huge disappointment from start to finish.

After deciding on our order, I waited at the register where a middle-aged lady just stared at us as if taking our order was a chore. Despite placing an order worth over $60, it felt like we were an inconvenience to her.

While waiting in the outdoor area, my name was eventually called out by a young girl with an unfriendly expression, which further added to the poor experience. When we finally got home to enjoy our meal, the issues continued. The chips, despite our request, had no chicken salt; the fish was dry, and the calamari was tough. Overall, the food was far below the quality we’ve come to expect.

I’m not sure if there’s been a change in ownership or management, but this was by far one of my worst experiences here. I’m left disappointed and won’t be returning. I’ll be posting this on food review sites to help others avoid a similarly poor...

Do yourself and the family a flavour and take the night off cooking and experience Brisbane's, and maybe Australia's best family owned and run fish and chippery. I go to the Moorooka Shop and recommend their tackle box and any of the rod and reel combos. All fish is displayed and cooked fresh to your order. I have had all of them, but the coral trout is my favourite. The chips are fluffy on the inside and crunchy on the outside. Calamari is tender with a beautiful light flavourful coating. Prawn cutlet is superb not from a packet. Sea scallop is tender and juicy. Portions are VERY generous.
