Wow. Just wow. The team at Jantry (yes, I HAD to abbreviate on account of me talking about this place so often) are unbelievable. Believe the hype, it's everything you've read.
Yes, the place gets noisey due to the echoing wooden floors, but it's also the floors that make the space feel so homely. And yes, it did get warm in there in summer, because the AC was broken but fixed now. And yes Nims can look a little intimidating while she spins her genius behind her MacBook in the corner but I bet none of us can do what she does without looking a little perplexed every now and then!
But all that fairs insignificant next to the mouth watering meals the kitchen delivers. Not because they are experienced with the menu either, as even that changes every 2-3 weeks (yes, weeks!) based on the best produce Nims can source. Think about that for a moment. Menu changes twice a month, every dish I've ever had there (over ten now) has been nothing short of exquisite, and yet the most you'll pay is $21. Mind blowing value, head spinning flavour combinations, and top shelf service all for twenty one dollars. Really?!
The flavour combinations, textures, and differently heated elements are a signature style of the chef and make for a symphony in your mouth. She has a unique ability to take an ingredient and base her whole menu around it by sourcing other produce that will pair well and is in peak season. I think of Nims like Mr Squiggles (for those who are old enough to remember the little fella) for food. She'll take a simple but beautiful element, and artistically build a perfect plate of food around it.
Oh then there's the coffee. Yes the cappuccino with the flakey chocolate looks amazing (and I'm sure would taste it too), but I cannot go past the immaculate piccolo with perfect body and temperature every time. Consistency is key, and these baristas have it dialed in. The Supreme beans have a flourishing aftertaste, coupled with the Maleny milk makes for a perfect accompaniment to any of the sweeter specials on the board for that fortnight (there's always two of three to choose from: pancakes, French toast, or waffles). The flat white has a sweeter taste and pairs well with savoury options in the menu.
Jantry is the new drug of choice! The ever flipping menu will make you go back for more. Every once in a while you'll visit a few times in the fortnight because you know that meal will disappear forever soon (how good was the lamb burger of early May 2016, holy moly!?). Best of all? Nims will feed you like you're family. The sort of joy I see in her eyes when she delivers a plate of food to a guest is the same I've seen in my own mum serving me. This Chef/Owner takes her food seriously, and Brisbane is the...
Read moreIf I could give zero star I would.. been here for a few years nearly weekly as I use to love the place no matter how busy or long the food took.. today we were confronted by the boss Nims saying that she can’t believe we were there after we’ve given them a bad review.. Seriously? U don’t jus go to anyone and say that.. it was such an insult.. we had to prove that it wasn’t us. The review written by a lady called Kate P said that she went on a Saturday , I hardly go on a Saturday as I know they have long waits and my kids get hungry very fast and the review goes on about waiting a long time for a babycino and we have never ordered babycino for my boy as he only wants chocolate milkshake, the review talks about takeaway coffee, I knew ages ago they don’t do takeaway coffee for adults.. n the boss still didn’t believe we weren’t the people who posted the review (from some Kate p), saying the wait times was long, which is true, and the boss is rude, which is true, she has never said hi to us in all these years and today was the first time she talks to us and we were greeted with the above comment and after obviously us showing her the review isn’t written by us and then she goes on to say we were always rude and difficult? Seriously?
If u have kids don’t come here as they think we are all difficult and rude and messy.. we are busy making sure the kids eat properly and having our hands full.. I have a 1 yr old and 4 yr old to make sure they eat which is what we come here for.
No restaurant has made me cry and I use to come cos this was where my boy grew up to love the food here with his milk shake..we are never coming back again after this incident. Who does this to their customer ?
For the person called Kate P. If you don’t mind just trying to identify yourself so that our name...
Read moreGreat 5 star food. Not such great service (2 Star Max)!!! We were left standing by "the wait to be seated" sign on a not so busy Wednesday morning for 10min without being acknowledged. I approached the staff to ask if it's possible to be seated and received quite a gruff response from the lady in charge to wait outside as they were busy/short staffed. We waited another 5 min and after being passed numerous times by staff we were finally offered a shared table out the back. When we asked if we could sit at an available table next to where we had waited, we were told yes sure (a bit odd why not offer us our own table to begin with or even ask us where would we like to sit) . So to summarize it took about 20 min to be steated at tables that were available when we arrived and had no one waiting in front of us. Finally seated we quickly ordered 2 specials as we were running out of time before a midday appointment. It took another 10min to be offered water and had to ask to a see menu for drinks. When the food did arrive it was good but the poor service and gruff response from the manager was sadly far more memorable. As good customer service is paramount and tends to flow from the top down and clearly was not the forte of the manager I strongly recommend hiring a front of house expert to match the hard work achieved by the kitchen. Conclusion the food was good but not that good it warranted the wait and bad attitude. But easily fixed if they want to address it. Wont rush back as plenty of other good places wirh a more well...
