To be clear, this is a Chinese sushi bar. Itâs a cheap copy of real Japanese food and is probably OK for locals who donât know any better. The difference lies in the quality of food and service. I would call this an authentic Chinese waidi (small town) dining experience. The staff are not intentionally rude, itâs just that this level of service is considered adequate (in China).
The open counter kitchen looked cluttered and dirty. They didnât have any fresh Salmon - the most basic foundation for any sushi bar. 2 out of 3 chairs were broken. Even in Shanghai this place would not fly.
In Japanese sushi bars, when the chef brings out fresh Salmon they make an announcement in Japanese to the customers before they slice it up. Authentic sushi chefs acknowledge the customer and will gladly prepare new dishes on request TO PROVE IT IS FRESH. This aiyi however was busy smothering cheap rice dishes with sauce and stacking plates on top of each other even though I was the only customer in there. Iâve never seen dishes stacked up in an empty sushi bar. Very strange as the whole point of sushi is freshness! When I asked why they donât have fresh Salmon, the aiyi made the excuse âbecause our supplier already cuts itâ. Really? Or is the aiyi not qualified to cut Salmon sashimi?
If you want authentic Japanese food or just decent sushi, avoid this place. Their âCha Bu Duoâ (close enough) attitude of this place is not good enough for Kingston. They get one star for at least cleaning...
Read moreI would call it a country Aussie/Chinese sushi. Definitely not Japanese sushi. Too much sauce, too much mayonnaise, raw fish selection was so limited (salmon, tuna, kingfish) Most items on offer were covered in oil or rolled with avo. Some raw fish we so badly and thinly sliced.
We gave up on sushi and tried to order karaage don (fried chicken bowl), the staff just said "karaage don?" to me and went into the kitchen, food didn't come out for a while, which made us wonder if they actually had our order. When it came finally, it was rice, chopped boiled cabbage (not even thinly sliced, chopped like 5mm thickness) with chicken on top. No sauce. Even my 13 yo daughter can do better... especially for the time taken. Chicken was ok, freshly fried. Rice was pretty bad, cheap dry medium grain. Not the grade of rice you would have at a restaurant thats supposed to be serving sushi.
The plastic covers on sushi looked old and not so clean. The bowl we asked for sharing the chicken was not even dried properly. No one greeted when we walked in. They did not offer any water. No service whatsoever. When we were paying, one of the chef guys was handling cash with his gloves on. I assume he would have gone back inside the counter and started making sushi with the same gloves on, which is soooo bad.
It is m shocking to see they call themselves a sushi restaurant and people here give more than 4 stars. Way overpriced for...
Read moreI've been a regular at SUSHI GO for a while now, and I can't recommend it highly enough. The prices are incredibly fair, especially considering the current inflation. It's refreshing to see a restaurant that values its customers enough to keep their prices stable.
