Golden Drum, a popular Chinese restaurant in Canberra's CBD, is a hot spot among university students for its delicious hot pots. We decided to try their grilled fish hotpot, and you can choose between frozen (cheaper) or fresh fish. We went with the frozen option. The dish includes potato noodles, tofu skin, black fungi, and seaweed, with options to add extra toppings and customize the spice level. We chose medium spice, which was just right. However, the flavor did get pretty intense and salty after a while. The fish itself was nicely deep-fried and juicy, and even though it was frozen, it was hard to find any flaws. The hotpot was served with steamed white rice, and overall, it was a good experience and worth the money.

Takes forever to get your food, and they will not let you know how long it will take. Happened several times. Thanks for the comment. Yes, I made another order at 7:20 because the waiter(or waitress) forgot the menu we ordered. And had to wait and could finish the second dish at 7:50. I do not think customers will be happy if you serve the next dish after finishing the first one, especially in Chinese Cuisine. I mean, it is not a course menu, eh? And yes, it is a reasonable timeframe. BUT IT IS NOT if the foods are served separately.

The ambience was great. This restaurant has private dining rooms that can accommodate about 10-12 people. That’s what we booked for a farewell dinner. Food is tasty which I acknowledge. However, after eating I was thirsty like nothing and ended up drinking 2 jugs of water. I felt the food has MSG or similar that opened up the taste buds. Even another friend that attended the dinner confirmed this. Hence why I’m giving 2 stars. The portions are generous and they came quickly after ordering.

Hands down best Chinese food ever. Only let down by 2 things: You order from a menu on an iPad. I know lots of restaurants do this and QR code - I just ask why? It's not user friendly having to scroll back and forth to find what you want. Please give us an old fashioned hardcopy menu. Be aware. There are TWO menus. One for Chinese and one for non-Chinese. If you are not Chinese/Asian? they will give you the soft menu. Don't fall for it. All the best food is on the Chinese menu. I only know because my Chinese friend ordered and we got awesome dishes. When I went in alone, I was given a different menu. I asked why and they said "Some people don't like spicy". Hey, let us decide if we want spicy! Golden Drum, you are letting yourselves down with the 2 menu thing - give the people the best food you can offer! If you are not Chinese, ask for the real menu and you will not be disappointed. The food was good but last night I went there alone and the double cooked pork I ordered smelled bad. I am sure the pork they used was not fresh and I am not a picky eater or have a sensitive smell. I have talked with my friend who also said the pork ribs she had last time were also stinky. Even the spices couldn't cover the smell. And as far as I know their chefs change regularly so the quality of food is very inconsistent. Bad luck this time the food isn't tasty at all, not only because of the stale pork. 😅I still finished it because I was hungry and unwell, just wanted to have some food then go back to sleep. But I definitely still want to let whoever is thinking about giving it a try know it's not...
