Read moreI was excited to find Gyukatsu in Melbourne, but this place turned out to be a huge letdown. The service was extremely slow. We waited forever just to place our order and it took around 40 minutes to get our Takoyaki, even though we were told there would be a 30-minute wait for the Katsu. That led us to believe the other food would arrive sooner.
Aside from the wait, the staff were inattentive and careless. They forgot to give us water, even after we reminded them, and we ended up without any for the entire evening. When our first main, the Sukiyaki, finally arrived, it made me even more frustrated - not just because it tasted average, but because the staff carelessly placed the gas stove leg on top of my phone while I wasn't looking.
The design of the restaurant also contributed to the poor experience. The tables were WAY TOO SMALL for this type of meal. There wasn’t even enough room for one main dish like the Sukiyaki, and the Katsu required space for a second stove. When our Katsu finally arrived, after approximately 1.5 hours of dining - the staff either forgot the stove for it or waited until we finished our Sukiyaki to make space. This wasn’t a smart move, as the katsu just sat there getting cold.
Overall, it was a terrible experience from start to finish: bad service, mediocre food, and a poorly designed environment. If I could, I’d give this place...

The meat quality here is seriously top tier and I can't rave about it enough. Every slice of wagyu just melts in your mouth with every bite - truly a wagyu lovers dream.
Onto the teishoku sets - I love how generous yet balanced the portions are here. Each set includes rice, Japanese style potato salad, onsen egg, miso soup, cucumber pickles & shredded cabbage meaning all that's left to do is pick your protein of choice.
Highly recommend ordering the Gyukatsu if you come here. The self serve hotplate gives everyone the ability to cook the meat to their liking and you get to grill as you go so you don't miss out on any crunch action.
And if you're in the mood for something on the soupier and sweeter side, the sukiyaki here is a dish that's perfect for sharing between two people if eating this on its own! I made sure to generously dip every slice of wagyu chuck flap into the pasteurised eggs which made each bite sooo creamy...
