Great place if you don't have children! Went there today with 3 kids under 5. Ordered hot food from the cafe and sat outside so the kids could play in the park and could we could look after the bikes. Half way through our meal, a waitress told us that they had made a mistake and that hot food couldn't be eaten outside, as it deters people from drinking alcohol. Neither my wife or I were drinking alcohol, nor did we intend to and instead of apologising and notifying us for next time we were told to move inside to the restaurant. Given that we have a two week old son, as well as the bikes, I had to stay outside while my wife had to control the other two children in the restaurant. While I think their rules around hot food outside are ridiculous, the fact that it was the staff that made an honest mistake and we were the ones that ultimately had our meal ruined is really disappointing. I know the venue has just opened and has teething issues, but I feel that they really need to figure out their policies. If you were to go there as a family with young kids, either the kids can't play in the playground and sit quietly in a restaurant (good luck!), they play there unsupervised (as the restaurant has no clear views or immediate access to the playground) or one of the parents has to stand outside the whole time to supervise.
Great food otherwise, but won't be heading back with the kids...
Read moreThis is an update from last year. Since then Management seems to have changed as have the cooks. This weekend I ordered the Steak Sandwich. It was pretty disappointing, very overdone herbs, not a slice of steak but rather shaved steak. I couldn't finish it. Gone are the nice utensil and condiment trolleys. Other things too. So not as good. Still a good location, and good for kids. Also, not cheap.
And, I really disliked the audio blast of off channel promotional garbage during the football game (which is why I was there), and which is why I left mid-game.
This is my post from late 2024: I like this place. I've been twice now for dinner, and both times have been very enjoyable. I had the Fish & Chips both times because they were so good the first time. The fish is excellent, the chips crispy and generous, and the salad was good - not drowning in dressing. The accompanying caper aoli is a standout, partly why I had the F&C twice. First time my son had the Scotch Fillet and completely cleaned his plate. Prices are fair, and kids eat free on Thursdays. Great play area, too, and you can eat outside on a warm night. It'll be my new local. Staff and bar service were friendly too. PS, I'm not a relation, just happy to have Carnabys within walking...
Read moreI remain disappointed.
Each visit yields a consistently subpar culinary experience.
The food lacks flavor; the children's penne ragu was particularly disappointing, consisting primarily of bland pasta and sauce, devoid of seasoning.
The chicken was similarly tasteless, and the vegetable salad excessively sweet.
The pork belly sandwich suffered from the same excessive sweetness.
It appears that the food is inadequately seasoned, marinated, and prepared.
The steak's accompaniment requires reconsideration; the potato block is unappetizing and flavorless, and the broccoli was burnt. Why not offer a more appealing side, such as a fresh salad, cooked vegetables, or perhaps french fries?
While the service and enviroment are excellent, significant improvements are needed in plating and seasoning. The potato block is unacceptable.
Ginger Beer was great.
Seasoning the dishes is crucial.
