Absolutely wonderful experience. The only issue I had was that we had made a booking (myself and my fiance), and they placed our table right on the tail end of a highchair. Obviously, not one to be nitpicky, but we looked at the table, and the back end of our chair would have basically almost been stuck on the back of a high chair.
I'd advise if you make a booking to be super specific about the placing that you'd like (obviously, if they can accommodate - I used to work in hospitality so you're not going to always get everything you want)
Apart from that, they took us to an outdoor table while they told us that they'd let us know when an inside table opened up that wasn't so close to a highchair. And yes, there was outdoor heating!
All the servers were and made sure to double-check our orders and any special requests that we had. We got free table bread, and it was incredible, along with the olive oil and salt provided to us. Bread was basically a meal in and of itself.
We had spicy potatoes (unfortunately, I can't remember the Spanish names!) a beef cheek with potatoes, calamari, chill prawns, Spanish meatballs, and the pickled octopus. It was absolutely amazing. I literally put us both in a foodd coma.
Gave us boxes to pack our food up, and the food came out quickly, even on a busy night.
Toilets were excellently serviced and clean.
A five-star experience will definitely...
Read moreGalician restaurant in......Ballarat. I found out about this place while I was in Santiago de Compostela having a coffee in a bar. Was talking to a bar attendant who said his friend from uni went to Melbourne and opened a restaurant. I was in a state of ecstasy thinking about all the pulpo gallego, pimentos de padron and empanada I will be devouring back home. Finally I made a journey to Ballarat to find a really cosy restaurant with a menu that indeed was something I was hoping for. Their pulpo gallego is actually imported from Spain and tasted exactly as it tastes in Galicia! Most of the dishes - and I ordered half of the menu in my excitement - were excellent and went great with a bottle of Albariño (a famous galician white wine) as was Tarta de Santiago. The only thing I REALLY missed was Pimentos de Padron and Empanada - i can't imagine a Galician restaurant without these two staple foods..... At the end they offered us a few shots of aguardiente (spanish grapa) as a gestue of hospitality. Finally, i noted that they had a dish for quemada - a ritual to protect against witches - where the dish is filled with spirit and burnt for some time while stirring it. Given their name is Witches in gallego - a most appropriate ritual to perform! Hope to witness...
Read moreWe were a bit unsure whether to go here as we had all just come back from a few weeks in Spain and Portugal and more tapas wasn't high on the list of priorities. However needs must!
Our hosts had eaten here previously and recommended the Feed me chef option which resolved the problem of what to choose from a menu full of interesting options. They are happy to adapt it if any dietary constraints.
I resorted to Vivono to sort through the wine list and came up with a Guimaro Ribeira Sacra Mencia 2015 from way up on the NW coast of Spain, on the coast almost down to Portugal border. The owner very kindly offered a taste of the same grape as we hadn't come across Mencia before. Very tasty, medium body red with subtle tannins. Went very well with the wide variety of dishes we ended up eating.
The food was all very good and reasonably typical of what you would get in Spain especially regional Spain i.e. not so much of the tourist menus. Very generous serves - we had to hold our hands up when it came to dessert.
Very friendly and pleasant service with the owner (Juan?) out on the floor, serving, helping...
