Bommie is nestled within the stunning Hamilton Island Yacht Club, a location that beautifully captures the essence of its coastal surroundings. The architectural design draws inspiration from the Coral Sea, marine life, and the graceful movement of yachts, featuring a dramatic roofline that echoes the silhouette of billowing sails.
In preparation for our visit, we attempted to secure a reservation for a group of ten over a month in advance, navigating a frustrating back-and-forth process that ultimately resulted in our party being split into two tables of five. This arrangement, which divided couples and set a tone of exasperation, left some members joking about leaving for a pizza.
Having dined at Bommie on numerous occasions (probably 10 or more times), our expectations were understandably high. We were greeted with complimentary sourdough and whipped butter, accompanied by a delightful Japanese-style yellowfin tuna rice bite, which reset a positive tone for the evening. For my entrée, I chose the octopus, which, while beautifully presented, but was unfortunately overly acidic and not something I would order again. Conversely, the recommended tuna nori was a standout, earning rave reviews from my fellow diners, leaving me envious of their choice.
The Tajima MB6 striploin was a highlight—thick, juicy, and cooked to perfection, served with a braised shallot jus that paired well with the potato and vegetable sides. I requested a hot mustard from the kitchen to enhance the dish, and it certainly added the desired punch.
Regrettably, the desserts fell flat all around and did not meet our expectations, leaving us wanting more. In summary, our experience at Bommie was disappointing, especially given our previous visits. While we plan to return, the overall experience did not justify the $300 per head, including wine. The rules regarding table splits for larger groups were particularly challenging, and we hope for a smoother experience next time. Based on previous dining experience, Bommie would receive a 5-star result, but I would rate this experience a 3, but saying that I will elevate this to a 4 based on history and...
Read moreThis is an honest review from a couple who enjoy fine dining. My partner (who is actually a chef that specialises in fine dining) and I were disappointed with the food provided at this establishment. It’s hard to give a more fleshed out criticism on a short public review such as this so I will leave that comment as is, I felt there was a lot they could have improved upon in terms of the food.
In terms of pricings, we purchased the $130 per person for a 3 course meal with homemade sour dough, butter, and an amuse-bouche. For reference restaurant Dan Arnold in Brisbane offers a 5 course meal with 3 amuse-bouche’s, 3 different types of bread and 2 different butters for $150 per person. That being said, Hamilton island itself I regret visiting as I have come to realise that the definition of tourist trap was more than likely formed here. I’m getting side tracked though. The drinks are the same price as most other places on Hamilton island, which was a pleasant surprise. All in all, pricing is not great for what you get in terms of the food.
The saving grace for the restaurant is the service, they uphold standards that one would expect from a fine dining restaurant. The staff attempted to be accommodating for us, offering replacement dishes and not charging us for an extra we ordered, that we did not end up eating. Our host also called for a shuttle van as we were dining later at night after the last community bus had left which was very much appreciated in the...
Read moreA truly disappointing experience here. We made reservations well in advance for a high end dinner + night out with wonderful views, and it did not live up to the expectations. The primary issue was the service, which unlike the rest of Hamilton Island, was severely lacking. Our waiter was brusk and condescending for most of the meal.
Initially he gave us 2 different menus, but when I pointed it out, he (incorrectly) told me one was the seasonal menu and the other was pre-fixe. My wife ordered from one of the menus, then when her dish arrived it was the wrong one. Turns out he had given us and older menu and when my wife ordered one dish, he assumed she meant something else but did not check/confirm with her.
Only place in my entire Australia trip that the lamb was underwhelming. The waiter continued to push us through the meal to the point that we just wanted it to end. To get out of there sooner, we said we'd order a dessert to go and ordered the cheese platter. Despite the fact that we specified we'd like something to go, the waiter let us order the cheese platter and then after bringing it informed us they could not box it up because of food safety concerns. So we just left it and wasted it.
They ended up taking the one dish off of our bill but that did little to take the terrible experience of the night out of our mouths. I'd love to return to Hamilton Island but will steer people away from Bommie's...
