al Chiosco Pizzeria & Café — Restaurant in Kingscliff

Wife and I recently shared a 'gourmet' (ie. more expensive than normal) pizza with "amatriciana" topping. The pizza base was wafer-thin in the middle and turned to a doughy mush with the topping, which was too liquid (mainly due to the addition of cherry tomatoes I suspect). Guanciale (cured pork cheek) is an essential ingredient in amatriciana, and when well cooked is soft and flavoursome, suffusing the sauce with its flavour. The guanciale here consisted of a handful of rubbery, tasteless nuggets of fat. Pecorino cheese is also expected in amatriciana. If there was any pecorino -- or any other cheese for that matter -- on this pizza then neither my wife nor I could detect it. We let a member of the wait staff know that the pizza was very ordinary. She said nothing, not even to inquire as to why we thought that. Very disappointing pizzas, we ordered the ham and mushroom, the calzone and a garlic pizza. All the pizzas were cooked round the edges, burnt in some places and very soggy in the middle. The garlic in the garlic pizza appeared to be that cheap mince garlic that can be bought in a jar. The garlic was very raw. The ham pizza only had ham on two of the slices and nowhere else, the mushrooms were not fresh they were the pickled ones from a can. The calzone was the worst of the lot, missing ingredients inside, thick bread which constituted about 70% of the whole calzone. We arrived to pick up our 2 pizzas only to find they’d been given away to someone else. we were then made to wait 30 minutes for new ones in the freezing weather with no offer to refund or perhaps offer a free item for the stuff around. We then arrived home to find the pizza base stuck to the box, half the toppings missing and one of the pizzas uncooked, especially the onion which was almost raw.
