In need of escaping the city for a couple of days, I spotted the spring time deal at The Kyneton Hotel, and subsequently booked 2 nights. The day before I was due to arrive I received and email from "The Kyneton Hotel" asking me to confirm my details by sending pictures of my driver's licence and the front & back of my credit card. I'd already provided credit card details when I booked and charges had been made. This seemed very dodgy and I refused.
A one hour train trip from Southern Cross station and I was in Kyneton. A 10 minute walk down Mollison St & I was at the hotel where I was met by the very friendly Alison. I"m deaf and Alison made every effort to communicate with me in a helpful way. I was ready to hand over all the information that had been requested in the email, only to be informed that it was a scam. I later double checked the address and saw that it had come from a Hotmail address - definitely a red flag. BE WARNED: if you receive an email from the hotel asking for any sensitive information, check the address! Email them from their website address or call them before sending anything.
The accommodation is above the pub, with the rooms having been renovated in the past year or so. My double room was fresh, clean, warm and comfortable. The bathrooms are shared, which I was initially a bit hesitant about, but given the price I was paying I overlooked that. It didn't turn out to be an issue. The only amenities in the room are TV & reverse cycle air con. There is a guest lounge where you can make a cuppa, watch TV or sit out on the balcony.
The pub downstairs has been lovingly restored and is an obvious hub for the community. There were always people in there of an evening, even on a school night! Never over crowded or rowdy, it certainly did not affect the peace & quiet of the rooms upstairs.
Kyneton itself is a great little town with lots of interesting shops and places to eat. The botanical gardens and walk along the Campaspe are very relaxing. Perfect for a picnic on a warm day. Neighbouring towns of Trentham, Castlemaine and the Daylesford/Hepburn area are easily reached for day trips too.
I recommend Kyneton for a visit and The Kyneton Hotel for a stay and a feed. Thank you...
Read moreAfter a big day out on eppalock with a family and friends we stopped in for a feed before heading back to melbourne, until we found out this wack pub doesnt even sell the classic chicken parma. So i settled for the 25$ (plus 15% surcharge) burger, which was okay until it fell apart, then i went to the chips which were in a basket the size of a maccas kids meal.
Dad lost it when they didnt sell jack daniels in the premix bottle, our kids lost it to find they dont sell fanta or any type of orange drink so they were stuck with solo and water.
Mum thought this place was a joke to order the beef schnitzel and then be given a piece of meat that looked and tasted like a big skinny hamburger patty.
The kids meals were okay, from ordering the chicken strips, though they did complain about how oily they were. And we had to ask the waiter for napkins (that werent provided) to soak up the oil..
The waiters behind the bar were nice and friendly, however the chick serving food needs to smile and actually enjoy her job, its obvious she doesnt
All in all id never return, was probably the best waste of $150 id ever spent. For a country style pub id expect way better. However this place does warrant a 1 star rating because none of us got food poisioning...
Read moreI’ve stayed at the hotel on 3 previous occasions with my partner and always had a great time; this last stay was with my 2 teenage sons and was equally as good . Hosts Sam and Alison accommodating as always, put us up in an adjoining room so I could keep an eye without being in the boys’ space. WiFi and TV to keep kids / teens entertained after a day out in the field checking out the scene. While the hotel is central and is the perfect springboard for exploring the area (and town), the hotel itself has a history that’s worth checking out (…. Ned Kelly … ). One of the main draw cards for me is the cosy pub downstairs where you’re able to chill with an ice cold lager or wine after a day out; as a pre dinner drink at the award winning restaurant in the hotel; or a night cap after dinner at any of the restaurants you’ll find within a 5 minute walk. There’s a beer garden as well .. perfect for sundowners (in summer months obvs). In a nutshell .. it’s a warm , homely , inviting hotel where we’ve always felt more than welcome. We’ll be back .
PS did I mention that room rates are the best in the area...
