While I am writing this, myself and my wife both have explosive diarrhoea 20 minutes after eating from this place. I’m hungry and I have a burning arse. Going to a Japanese restaurant The one thing I always order is nigiri, I was looking forward tonight only to find this place does not serve salmon. After we ordered the lady serving came up and refunded us as they have no Nigiri tonight . How can a Japanese restaurant not have this basic dish? After 10 min there were still 5 tables not being served, however in the counter were 14 meals waiting for something. Not in a hot area just on the bench. 5 min wait to orderstanding at the counter then a 50 min wait for our 2 basic dishes. Under cooked, dry, unflavoured rice. The meat had no flavour and was just grease as per the photo. The pork was nice, crispy and flavourful and the spring rolls were good, however they poured the sauce on top of it. I did not get to choose if I wanted sauce on my food. The chicken curry was very watery had a very mild flavour but was runny. It’s 16 degrees outside however the air condition was on 18 blowing everywhere, I enjoy the cold but clearly everyone was uncomfortable. We were feeling really disappointed by the meal. we left went to another shop and after seven minutes from leaving we both really had to go to the toilet badly both to racing home to have explosive diarrhoea. Will never be going back to this place again and really do not recommend the food . It was very average and to get explosive diarrhoea 20 minutes after eating the meal. Stay away.

Grat decor, cute booths. Menu looks good. Would advise when ordering to ask them not to put sauce on anything but in a side dish. Two of us eating one will literally enjoy almost anything he's fed and neither of us really liked any of what we ordered because of the sauce. The mushrooms, prawns and fried chicken all had this sauce that had a golden syrup type flavour. It's a real shame because the mushrooms were incredible as were the prawns but they were ruined by the sauce. We were going to stay for a main, but we're nervous that sauce would be on the main as well (it wasn't on the gyozas and they were absolutely lovely but again, the sauce it did come with was a little odd). Edamame was underdone. Would have given five stars except for that strange sauce. It all looked delicious too.

2025-09-12 - 4 Stars What a change. I swore to never return but felt another review was warranted. Lunchtime specials are well priced. L5 Teriaki Chicken Bento box was $10.95 plus a $3 Miso soup so lunch was $13.95 Food tasted great. Nice and fast. All smiles inside, mostly clean but some tables not cleared. My table was clean but the seat had food products all over it. Well worth visiting again 2023-09-01 - 1 Star Quite poor. Rice was hot, everything else cold and dry. Beef and chicken was so lacking protein volume for the money paid. Spring rolls were just dough and not substance. Surely these are not Japanese owners and staff. I cannot recommend any of the dishes Never again. Will keep searching for a decent Japanese restaurant

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 We’re visiting Maryborough and had Koi Japanese Restaurant highly recommended to us by friends—and we’re so glad we listened!

The server was exceptionally friendly and helpful from the moment we walked in. Despite the restaurant being quite busy with both dine-in guests and phone orders, the service was warm, efficient, and nothing was too much trouble. The communication between the front of house and kitchen staff was spot-on—everything ran smoothly.

The food? Absolutely delicious. Super fresh, beautifully presented, and clearly made to order—no frozen or reheated elements here. Our group tried a range of dishes from the menu and everyone was genuinely impressed.

Koi has definitely earned a spot on our “must-return” list for the next trip to Maryborough—if not only to eat here again!...
