Phoenix Kitchen Clayton Review update 10/7/2024
My wife and I took our friend here to celebrate her birthday. We ordered a Soy Chicken, half eaten at the restaurant and the rest to take away. Unfortunately, it was a disappointment - slightly overcooked, was neither tender nor having "smooth" skin.
We repeated the dish I had before; Salted Fish Eggplant Claypot. The standard had not dropped.
The King Prawn Wasabi was excellent. The prawns were coated thinly and fried to perfect crispiness.

I brought some friends here for dinner. There are no large tables to sit more than 4. The 4 dishes ordered are of good combination. Salted Fish Eggplant Claypot Chicken Ribs Coated with Salted Egg Yolk Garlic Pork Spareribs Spicy Beef Steak 2xbowls plain rice The portion sizes were enough for 4, and the dishes had just had the right amount of gravy or sauce. The chicken ribs were deep fried to golden brown, crispy yet not soaked with oil. This was a fantastic meal, very much different from the previous visit. I revise my ranking from 3 stars to 4 stars.

Just want to give this restaurant a try, because we do not have good impression with one other outlet.
This definitely is much brighter, cleaner and has better ambience. Since it is for lunch, my wife and I order Soy Chicken with rice and Wanton with Noodlein Soup. The Soy Chicken is tender, smooth and flavoursome. We have eaten good soy chicken that good for a long time. However, we have to give the noodle dish a thumb-down; the wonton skin is thick and the noodle is soft, which lacks that "silky al dente" texture. Very likely, we will give this place another chance, ordering...
Read moreToday, I tried Phoenix Kitchen at Clayton, for dinner. In terms of the atmosphere of the restaurant, it has a modern Chinese feel, with a bit of classic Chinese, at the front of the restaurant, with the roast meats. Service was friendly, had good communication between staff, and was attentive whenever you need something. I felt humble coming here. But, customer interaction could be improved. Then came the food. I tried the Stir Fried Squid, with Fresh Chilli, and Stir Fried Flat Rice Noodles, with Beef in Soy Sauce. The squid looked vibrant from the red and green chilli, and onions. Seasoning was on point. You can definitely see the Sichuan peppers. It added a good punch to the Squid. It's tender, perfectly cooked. Had a nice kick from the chilli, and most importantly, it had a light, crunchy coating. However, I had no idea what the sauce was. Probably a secret recipe. The rice was fluffly, white, and cooked perfectly. As for the noodles and beef, the beef was tender. It was probably marinated with some starch and soy, to make the beef more succulent. What was great about it, was that it was still sizzling after it was cooked to perfection. Nice and flavourful. The rice noodles were al-dente, not too chewy, cooked to perfection. The sauce tasted savoury, had that nice flavour of soy, which pairs well with the Noodles and beef. Definitely a winner. Overall, it's worth trying out if you are into Yum Cha or...
Read moreUpdate (Sep 2025): I am a Level 7 contributor on Google and I have been to this restaurant a few times. This time, I decided to order the roast duck Maryland on rice which costs $19.90, $2 more than cuts without drumstick. I added a drink and an appetiser for an additional $7. I selected the seaweed appetiser which has been marinated in vinegar and garlic. This appetiser has an overpowering garlic taste, and I don't recommend that. The roast duck was average in taste and I could not understand the glowing comments on the roast duck in other reviews.
Mar 2025: I ordered the stir fried rice noodles with beef and egg gravy sauce. I paid ~$19. There is a subtle "wok hei" or caramelised flavour to the noodles, which is not too overpowering. The beef slices were generous. The restaurant doesn't provide green chilli. Portion wise, it's bigger than the same dish sold in next Malaysian taste. The servers spoke Mandarin. I didn't like the layout of the restaurant because tables were crammed in a long, narrow space.
I came back the 2nd day to try the beef brisket noodle soup. I chose the option with prawn dumplings for an extra $1. The dumplings were very freshly made, authentic to Cantonese cuisine. The beef brisket was tender but has a fair amount of fatty cuts. The broth was average, still delicious. Highly...
