Every shopping strip in Melbourne has the ubiquitous Vietnamese bakery where one can secure a Bahn Mi and most usually, a range of bread and often ordinary pies. These establishments are as safe as they are average in their food quality but every now and then, you stumble on a gem. Catching up with a mate for a hurried lunch break this week, we stumbled upon this little bakery in a small shopping strip in Darryl Street Scoresby. It was one of three similar offerings on the same short street but boy were we glad we picked this one, it was a revelation.
Small, bright, neat and clean the range of Bahn Mi was extensive and all carefully prepared in a crusty roll made on premises (as you’d expect). The first thing I noted was a larger than average selection of pies. OK so they all looked identical to the pies you could pick up in any similar bakery across Melbourne but the big difference came on taking your first bite. The pastry was crisp a flaky, already a good sign but instead of an average sloppy and often bland beef mince filling, this was a rich and flavoursome with a thick dark gravy, a definite cut above. I was only disappointed I wasn’t hungry enough to fit in a second.
Another winner were their cakes. While all looked good, I opted for playing Russian roulette with that Aussie classic, a vanilla slice. Again it looked identical to any you might find in countless bakeries across Melbourne, the pale yellow rectangle topped with a thin pastry crust caped off with white icing. Again, the first bite showed that this was an establishment where the baker put care into delivery of their products. The custard was soft creamy and absolutely delicious. None of that gelatinous goop or semi hard snot-block here. It was a sheer delight
The Allegra bakery was an unexpected find in a suburban shopping strip. I’ll definitely be back to try more of their baked goods for sure. The baker should be entering that vanilla slice in the the Great Australian Vanilla Slice Triumph (competition held annually in...
Read moreLatest Update as at 5th Aug 2025. Price is $10.50 for a banh mi now. And it's still worth paying for it!!!
Yes, I'm aware there's another bakery just a few shops down that also serves banh mi. However, after alternating between them, I've decided I prefer this one.
Allegra's banh mi roll features better crackling pork. Some people might not like it served in a box, but I appreciate it because it makes the meal less messy. Sometimes, banh mi can be overloaded with pate, which ends up spilling and creating a mess. (I'm posting a photo of my empty box here).
Additionally, the chili they use is superb—not overly spicy, but it gives just...
Read moreToday at approx 2.15pm I was served by a delightful young lady who was very polite and had excellent up sell skills . Made me the best Roast Pork Roll I think I have ever had … and then asked would I like anything else with my lunch ( nice touch ) so I ordered a large cappuccino. This coffee was once of the best I have had and I have two a day all over Melbourne. It was hot , perfectly blended and the take away cup was massive and only $4.50 . When next in the Scoresby area I will be back to order the same again .
And too that young lady you have a brilliant career in hospitality to look forward to !!
