I love the variety, selection and quality of food at Aviv. There's a good mix of savoury and sweet items, and you can always find something to buy to satisfy a craving or to organise a work lunch/party or whatever. Their bagels aren't my favourite, but they have great quiches, and often at work we get their cakes for various occasions and they never disappoint. However ... with all of that said, the only real negative I can say is that they are a tad overpriced and to me, it lets them down. I also happened to buy a birthday cake, a mini quiche and a cookie and I had some sticker shock for sure. When the cookie was rung up and it said $5, I thought that was the mini quiche and cookie added up together. So that day I spent $51 and when I was leaving, I asked if there was a bag to put the cake in. The only bags were the cloth ones, and they were going to charge me .50c for one when I just spent $51. I had to do a whole separate transaction on EFT-POS just to pay for this .50c bag. I feel that not only are they a bit overpriced, but they need to use common sense when charging for a bag after someone has spent a certain amount. It's a bit off putting, however I'm sure the lure of their bubka (the best I've ever eaten anywhere) will get me back there eventually down the road ...

AVIV Cakes and Bagels at Elsternwick Visited on 19/2/2022 AVIV is not close to home, however it is worth the trip to buy a few pieces for afternoon tea, or served as desserts after dinner. The window display is a bit of disappointment. If a passer-by does not know about its product will not stop and check out this gem. My wife and I order the following: Spinach Quiche Vegetable Quiche Raspberry Friand Babka Isreali Vanillia Slices The quiches have good amount of vegetable fillings, baked with the smooth savoury custard in the pastry case. A couple of quiches can be a meal for the day. The Raspberry Friand is a bit sweet for me. The filling looks baked cheese cake, but in fact it is almond meal. This is the first time I have Chocolate Babka Isreali. BabkaĀ is made of a rich brioche dough, light and not not doughy like normal bread. The filling is a real test of a good Vanilla slice. The pastry cream or creme patissiere must be flavoured by vanilla pod, light yellow colout, and slightly thick and not runny. We give cakes and pastries we have eaten thumbs-up.

Herbert has dedicated most of his life in being a baker and I see it in the cakes and everything else he makes. I met him briefly through a friend who used to live in Melbourne. I go there every time I miss my mums or my aunt’s cakes. They are always the best. The cheesecake, although not traditional polish but light and fluffy is one of my favourites. I hope he continues on for a while and I do worry about him handing over to the next generation but if he is as fussy about his legacy as he is with his cakes I’m sure he’ll find a good apprentice to take over. Anyway, to the cakes. I used to always get a fruit flan but I over indulged and need a break now. I always get a cheesecake, crustoli, poppyseed cake and bagels as my staples. Almost forgot the cherry danish. The chocolate babka is my son’s fav. It’s all great and you should try a bit of everything. Highly recommended, a must go if you love European cakes.

Absolutely the BEST cakes and desserts to be found in Elsternwick, bar none! The quality of their work is absolutely excellent, and the consistency is literally incredible. In the 15+ years I’ve been going here, I honestly can’t remember even one time when their cakes of pastries were somehow different from the last time I had one. The consistency is just amazing, every single time an item is purchased, it’ll be as close to identical as is possible, compared to every other time the same item was purchased.

All of the ingredients they use are very high quality and this is part of the reason that everything they sell here is also of the utmost highest quality.

Seriously, just try something from Aviv and there’d be very few ppl who go home unsatisfied. Everyone I’ve ever taken here has also become an instant convert, they all just love the place and everything Aviv makes.

One word of advice though, don’t go there in a Friday arvo or anytime much after midday. The queues are enormous, sometimes out the door! This just proves how much everyone loves Aviv, that they’re willing to line up our the door. If you must go on a Friday, just try to get there before midday if you don’t feel like standing in line for ages.

Other than that, can’t think of a single bad thing to say...
