Tommy Ruff Fishbar Elsternwick — Restaurant in Melbourne

The food was alright, however I do have a few critiques. The fish tacos weren't what they were hyped up to be, they were bland and not particularly flavorful. We got the platter for two, I wasn't at all impressed with the oysters, there were bits of broken oyster shell present, this lead me to almost vomiting up half my meal, the chips were also well below what I'm used to. The prawns were also very soggy and were perfumed with a not particularly pleasant smokey taste. The service was overly attentive, and seemed a little bit forced, which I guess is better then no service at all, however waitresses coming up and asking how your meal is at five minute intervals, while you're trying to swallow a mouthful of food is annoying.

Overall at the price point it's hard to be overly disappointed, the only reason I came in with high hopes is because of the reviews I had read here, I think I might sick to just some fried Flake if i swing past again in the future instead of trying to go for something that seemed a bit good to be true, I'll stick to getting my seafood platters at somewhere like Richmond oysters.

Edit: After my second visit to Tommy Ruff, I thought I'd try something simpler from the menu to see if there was any possibility for redemption. However after waiting 45 minutes for a flake and chips, and continuing to wait as I write this, I don't think I can recommend this venue at all. Changed my rating from 3 stars to one star, because of the huge wait times for bery...

Been meaning to go to Tommy Ruff for a while and finally did it tonight after going to the movies.

We were greeted and seated straight away - menus, water, specials - the usual.

The interior is quite nice. I started checking out what other patrons were having and everything looked really good.

Our order arrived promptly.

I had salmon, which comes with a salad (a choice of five) and either chips or rice. The salmon was cooked perfectly. There was some really interesting relish (I'm not sure if it's housemade) - I just couldn't get enough of it. It's sweet, but it also has a slight kick, and it's just perfect with the fries.

My partner had fish bites, prawn, scallop, and calamari. Everything was cooked really well and was absolutely delicious. My partner couldn't finish his dish - it was such a generous serving.

The service was great - everyone has a smile on their face and is very attentive.

Only one of us had a drink and the total bill came to $44.20, which was fantastic value!

We're definitely coming back...

Super expensive for what it is but you are not getting small meals. I was not greeted as I would of expected by the lady at the bar I arrived at 7:51 to pick up a order at 7:55 only to be told well it’s not 7:55 is it and it’s not ready. Oh ok wow you need a attitude check tho you made me wait another 10 minutes to get my order. A nice hello would of been nice or how is your night not hi your name was it a phone order I said no online. yeah I know it’s not ready. Pokie bowl had a hair in it really didn’t want to go back for that I am sure she would of said it was my fault. The chicken flavoured battered fish and coleslaw with chips I had look I spat the coleslaw out it was TERRIBLE extremely bitter I have no idea what you did to it but you can’t eat it. The size was great fish was good, the chipotle mayo yeah had better. Fish cake was good definitely house made beautiful creamy texture of the potato really well made. Would I go back hmmm 🤔 if I had to put up with the attitude of that young lady no way....
