Lined up early at Bakemono Bakers on a Saturday morning and by 8:30 there was already a solid crowd. Luckily, the line moved quickly. If youāre just grabbing pastries, youāll be in and out in no time. I got mine in under five minutes.
The bakery had such a calming vibe. You walk in and get hit with the smell of fresh coffee and pastries. The space is clean, warm, and minimal, with an open kitchen and a layout that honestly reminded me of a cosy bakery in Japan. Even with all the people, it didnāt feel hectic at all. Everyone was just quietly excited to be there.
I went for the yuzu almond croissant and it did not disappoint. Buttery, flaky layers with a light almond filling that wasnāt too sweet, and the yuzu gave it a perfect citrusy kick. It was a bit messy to eat ā I had crumbs all over me ā but I didnāt care at all. That croissant was worth it. Almond croissants are my favourite, and this one has stayed on my mind ever since. I also grabbed a canele which had a crunchy caramelised outside and soft, custardy centre with subtle Earl Grey and lemon flavours. Really well done.
The pastry selection is a bit smaller than other spots, but the flavour and vibe more than make up for it. Prices were actually a little cheaper than most Melbourne bakeries, which was a nice bonus.
Definitely coming back next time Iām in town. Manifesting a Sydney branch soon!š„°š¤© . . .

Ā Ā Ā Read moreWe frequent Bakemono Bakers whenever we are in the Melbourne CBD. We have tried (and love) most (if not all) of their Danish/breakfast pastries, such as their croissant, Almond & Yuzu croissant, Ham & Cheese croissant, Blueberry & Custard, Chocolate Croissant, Mixed Berries + Nutella Custard, Honey Sesame & Sea Salt. Note that only the pastries are ready if you arrive before 9am, thus on the occasions when we were there after nine, we managed to get their rum and vanilla caneles too.
Out of these pastries, we love the Almond & Yuzu croissant the most (they have perfected the balance of the flavor of the almond and yuzu, and the croissant is buttery, airy and flaky, combine with the almond + yuzu, itās a perfect marriage). All in all, all their pastries are fantastic and just so yummy.
Additionally, we also absolutely love their caneles, they are soooooooooo delicious: they have the perfect caramelised crust on the outside, yet remains tender and custardy inside. Love them.
In this visit, we arrived just after 11am (on purpose) so that we could get their matcha and Earl Grey caneles (which are ready at 10:30 am), and their meronpan (which are ready at 11am).
Their matcha and Earl Grey caneles are even more flavorful than their rum and vanilla caneles, the matcha (and Earl Grey) has further elevated the taste profile of the caneles. We were so glad to have gotten them this time š
The meronpan is also delicious, it tastes a lot like the Cantonese pineapple bun (but looks different), crusty skin...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreIām glad I decided to visit this little quaint bakery based on the glowing review. Itās every bit as good as the previous positive reviews have promised.
I visited two days in a row, between 9 to 9.30am and never had to wait long before being attended to. The downside of coming early was some items wasnāt ready yet.
The almond yuzu croissant was absolutely delicious and not to be missed. Itās not overly sweet like a lot of almond croissants can be, and the addition of yuzu flavour is unmistakable and adds a bit of tanginess to balance the sweetness. The croissant itself has excellent texture and taste, crispy on the outside, with soft and buttery body.
The other highlight was the honey sesame and sea salt pastry as it was something i hadnāt encountered before. It was actually really tasty, a nice balance of sweet and savouriness. The texture was like a soft pretzel.
Canele was something completely foreign to me prior to this, and this was our first taste of this french baking. As promised, it was hard and crunchy on the outside, and oh so soft and moist on the inside. We only tried the original/ vanilla one, as the other flavours werenāt ready on both days!
The only item we thought was a bit average, but not bad by any measure, was the ham and cheese croissant. It only pale in comparison to the other exceptional pastries available.
This bakery is truly exceptional, and one I would highly recommended and would strive to visit every time Iām...
