It surprised me when banh mi rolls in Sydney recently went up to $10+, however, it seems this is about a minimum price in most places including Melbourne. My recent experience at Banh Mi & Pho was very good. I ordered the crispy roast pork Banh mi. The standout feature was the generous portion of crispy roast pork – easily 20-25% more than what I've typically encountered in my last 10 banh mi rolls. This abundance truly elevated the experience and I found it great value for the extra pork alone.
The freshness of the baguette was noticeable, albeit slightly different from the traditional French style, yet undeniably delicious. The addition of crispy bits on top provided a satisfying crunch, enhancing the overall texture. While the sauce, reminiscent of a Hoisin blend with a hint of vinegar, was flavorful, it was the generous portion of crispy roast pork that stole the show. What impressed me most was the balanced application of sauce; it avoided the common pitfall of overwhelming the sandwich, ensuring each bite remained enjoyable without becoming soggy or messy.
While the inclusion of lettuce instead of daikon may deviate from tradition, the freshness of the salad ingredients was undeniable. However, from a purist's perspective, a return to daikon would be preferred. Nonetheless, the flavor and portion of the banh mi left me thoroughly satisfied, making it the best I've had in recent memory. Here's to wishing the establishment continued success in...
Read morePicture outside has cold cuts but not on the menu inside. Reflecting the population? Sort of a test of how Vietnamese the area is, I think. Was planning to get meatballs (xíu mại) and the thịt but panicked at the counter and got xíu mại and crispy pork (heo quay), so now really full. $11 each. Both delicious and very loaded, both with pâté (and lettuce!). I really loved the meatballs, even loved the struggle to fit it my mouth. Such tender xíu mại and a beautiful flavour. I was certainly no longer as hungry when I had the heo quay and I do wonder whether true crispy pork enthusiasts might have had some criticisms (some very chewy bits and possibly under rendered fat? No idea) but I thought it was excellent. I’m just such a sucker for a good xíu mại so that’s the one I really recommend. Not a bakery but good tiger rolls fresh enough for the task. Quite large menu, including cơm and Vietnamese iced coffee, as well as a beef bánh mì option (for the Muslim clientele perhaps?). Reassuringly mature Vietnamese lady serving, with poor English skills in true old school style, in a place that looks a teensy bit modern inside. Complementary thermos of tea if you dine in....
Read moreIt is a shame to have to write this review. The Banh Mi was pretty tasty.
Just one big problem. I tried to pay for an $8 Banh Mi in cash to avoid incurring a surcharge. The lady told me that I was not allowed to pay in cash.
Since I didn't have the option to pay in cash I would have assumed there would be no card surcharge. However, there was a surcharge of 50 cents (6.25%).
Although the price is listed at $8, the Banh Mi effectively costs $8.50 unless you spend over a certain amount. This is poor form. I'm happy to facilitate paying in cash, but this left me with a bad experience.
Please allow the option to pay cash or remove the surcharge, otherwise your pricing is misleading. - You will probably see more repeat customers if you...
