Having quietly bought a yummy array of baked goods on offer, since this bakery’s opening, I called on all my cheekiness to ask if their ‘brotchen’’ rolls came as a loaf’. Sadly, no… it did not. To my surprise, out popped their head baker (I’ve since learned is Henrik) from behind their display stands. Yes… he would have a go! With kindness to me and professional curiosity tickled, a loaf was in the making for the very next day. (Yes, it’s true). I was a little tentative going in the next morning, having stretched customer boundaries, but my concerns quickly dissipated, when I was happily presented with a warm smile and a freshly baked brotchen loaf! And!!... it was on the house!! I hugged my bread, like a new born child, all the way home. Then, promptly a LOT of my bread baby without sitting down to slowly savour it. I love brotchen loaf and I love Henrik. And not necessarily in that order. If you want to have a big moment of feeling very special, please visit Butterken in Mt Eliza. There is a very good reason the customer queue is sometimes out the door. Delicious things come to those...
Read moreSunday morning, I swagger through the front door like Al Pacino, brushing myself down, and placing large brown bags on the kitchen counter with grandiose gesture. Read moreAlthough I live in Mt Eliza, havent been to the village for a few weeks and was surprised to see a new store had opened. Being of German background my heart raced, "is this a german bakery". I walked in and was welcomed by smiley faces, a German baker with an iconic Tshirt "Motorbread". This place is the real deal. Their loaves are big, and I will say pricey, but you get what you pay for, if you want you can get half a loaf which lasts well (but we ate it quick). BütterKen thank you for arriving in my village. I will visit you every weekend.
Update: September 2024 Since my initial review this bakery has gone from great to best. The variety of produce on offer has increased as promised. I have 2 favourites:- Cheddar rolls - I know them as Käsestangen, the ones produced here quickly sell out. Reluctantly mentioning this, as there were only 2 left when I went there last weekend. Salt roll - goes well with everything.
Is this this the best bakery in...
