March 2022 UPDATE Vast improvement in food quality and service. Has become extremely popular due to its large serving sizes, low prices and BYO option. Fully reopened post COVID. Indoor and outdoor seating.
RESTAURANT HAS HAD A MAKEOVER Since my last review, this restaurant has changed its menu, renovated interior - floor now all one level. The food quality is just acceptable but its served quickly and cheerfully. Menu is largely cantonese. There are a few vegetarian options. Chinese tea served in thermos flask (Vietnamese style). We had sweetcorn soup (fairly bland) vegetarian mapo doufu (just OK), fried vegetable (quite good) and fried chicken (very salty) House wine (red or white) is $6 a glass or you can BYO for a $2 per person corkage fee. It's a very casual diner. the sort of place you'd drop in for a quick meal rather...

We ordered four dishes to share, Battered Sweet-Sour Pork, Fried Rice with salted Fish, Golden Chicken Ribs battered in Salted Duck Egg Yolk, and Beef in Egg Gravy. All dishes tasted incredibly good and hit the spot!
Char Siu House is 15 minutes walking distance from the outskirt of the CBD. No queue, no fancy setup, it's just about Chinese food at its best. The place is run by a family who puts all their effort in their meals, hence the serving is quick but...
Read moreWe came in tonight to try the desserts that we were too full to try last visit. Banana fritters and fried ice cream. A total nostalgic trip back to the 80's! Delicious delicious DELICIOUS! Banana fritter: Crispy light batter coating amazing fresh bananas served with quality creamy vanilla ice cream. Fried ice cream: Crunchy flavourful golden crumb on a generous ball of this same vanilla ice cream. The desserts were of generous portions. Both desserts a real skill to master, and compliments go to the chef! Front of house staff were warm, welcoming and extremely well attentative, we felt extra special we were remembered from last visit! All credit to you Char Siu House, you have well hit the mark again! Have not had anything this wonderfully reminiscent to the 80s golden era of Chinese food in...
