Maling Road is tucked away off the main road in Canterbury with the cutest little shops and lane ways. Coming here is like visiting a completely different place where time slows down and we instantly feel relaxed. At one end of the strip is COTE, one of our fave brunch spots – with a fresh white and natural wood interior, covered & heated seating outside for our fury friends, great coffee (Axil is the brew of choice here) and a consistently delicious menu.
In addition to their focus on exceptional food presentation and quality, the team pride themselves on making sure their visitors have the best possible experience. The staff are always so happy and friendly and it really shows in their customer service.
The breakfast & lunch menu is served all day with almost all brekkie dishes having vegetarian options; all scrambled eggs are dairy free; and Gluten free bread is available. They have a menu for the little ones, plus a great selection of hot and cold drinks, coffee alternatives, milk varieties and vegan smoothies. I’m loving the current cafe trend of including kombucha on the menu – perfect for the summer weather and a great healthy option.
This is our go-to cafe when we’re on this side of town. Consistently great food and coffee with a truly friendly welcoming vibe. We highly recommend...
Read moreThe chicken, no, the egg, no, the chicken, no, the egg. But the chicken needed to lay the egg. But the egg needed to hatch to create the chicken. Which came first?
This dilemma has caused much deliberation, and while we folks have speculated this cause and effect scenario for years, the important thing is that they both exist.
Speaking of cause and effect. I had the opportunity to visit Canterbury's Chicken or the Egg café, and this caused great joy. The effect? Satisfaction.
The venue has a touch of class, with a French Provincial inspired interior.
The menu offers an abundance of breakfast and lunch options, with something for everyone. As I skimmed the all-day breakfasts, the Turmeric Crab Omelette, and Maling Road Bruschetta were tempting! I couldn't go past the Toast of Paris, which seemed most appropriate in this elegant venue. Gracefully presented as a work of art on a plate, the Brioche French Toast was adorned with passionfruit curd, raspberry compote, salted caramel popcorn, a poached pear, and vanilla mascarpone. Its sweetness married well with the El Salvadorian espresso sourced from Axil.
While I'm no wiser as to which came first- the chicken or the egg; I'm glad to have discovered another gem of the...
Read moreThree of us came to the Chicken or the Egg Cafe on a Sunday for lunch. Among the three of us, we ordered the pancakes, baked eggs and corn fritters. Firstly, the customer service was exceptional and the waiters were very attentive and asked to make sure we were enjoying our meals. Secondly, the food was very delicious and the meal sizes were adequate; each meal was definitely worth what it cost. Thirdly, the place was absolutely bustling which is a strong testament to the popularity of the cafe. Fourthly, we were allowed to split the bill when paying for the meals at the end, which was very helpful. Thank you to the 'Chicken or the Egg Cafe'. I will DEFINITELY be back again to try a different meal next time.
Update: As promised in my previous review, I sure did come back to Chicken or the Egg. Two of us came here on a Tuesday for lunch and we ordered the snapper tacos and the salmon (it was a fish kind of day). Once again, I want to commend the staff for their attentiveness to us, checking up frequently to make sure everything was okay. Thank you for the delicious food and the...
