This morning I dropped past Xocolatl with my family (2 kids), after a trip to a nearby park, for a take-away ice cream treat. Ordering a hot chocolate, and 2-scoop ice cream, I asked if it was possible to have one scoop in a take-away coffee cup rather than their usual ice cream cups.

Although I didn't explain it in detail to the staff, one of my children has sensory issues and can't cope with flavours/colours being mixed. Normally I expect this sort of request to be met with hesitation (since this in practical terms equates to 2 x 1 scoop ice-creams, which is more expensive), and certainly wouldn't expect particularly generous servings thereafter. Instead, the staff at Xocolatl were friendly and judgement free - happy to oblige without question. The servings were generous and as is the case with everything at Xocolatl, the quality was exceptional.

Thanks to the staff at Xocolatl for this exceptional experience. A fantastic local business and I can't recommend...

I met a friend in Maling Road at 1530 today and found it to be fairly well closed up, with most cafés closing at 1600. I went inside one place, which still had an hour of trading left, only to find them sweeping the floor, leaving piles of dirt everywhere. There were no customers, and the radio was blaring. No atmosphere whatsoever. I left straight away. My friend recommended Xocolatl, as they do excellent hot chocolate, so we walked down there. Much to my delight, it was full of people, and beautifully warm and cosy. The staff were so lovely...very friendly and helpful. We were there for about an hour and a half, and in that time, they sold a constant stream of their stunning chocolates, which is a testament to how good they taste. The coffee was extremely hot, which I find alters the taste, and consistency of the milk a little, but other than that, this place is an absolute gem. It closes later than the others, which is just what this shopping...

Went in before lunch, it was quiet but the place filled up real quick. The bloke that made my coffee made it great, the girl was very efficient, both greeted every customer, made space for strollers, got highchairs when requested. The highlight was probably this woman I was sitting next with a broken arm that had ordered toast. She couldn’t put butter on it herself so she asked the girl if she could do it, took it to the back, and even cut it up into pieces for her. Next to me was a woman with a guide dog. Overall, the whole experience was delightful and the two individuals working looked like they have been working for years. No savoury food but the delights that the they did have...

Really love the five star quality and range of the chocolates here, as well as the exclusive gourmet flavours. I'm particularly fond of the Christos (dark hazelnut praline). They have operated under a Fair Trade model since 2011 and they source Fair Trade Certified Belgian Couverture. The chocolates are expensive, but it is worth paying the price to support the Fair Trade supply chain model, local business and employment and of course to treat someone special. Their warm beverages are excellent too with chocolate melts dissolved. The orange chocolate is divine as are the peppermint and hazelnut varieties!

I really liked the Spanish hot chocolate, got it with almond milk, the hints of vanilla and spice were subtle but made for a more interesting drink. Would definitely recommend it! I would be interested in trying the rose and spice hot chocolate next time as I think more spice would be even better. We also had the chocolate affogato, a spin on affogato without coffee and that tasted sweet and delicious. We also had some artisan chocolates, they were nice but I felt I didn’t need to add anymore chocolate after the rich drinks.
