Iāve heard it so many times before⦠āI left the corporate world because I needed a changeā⦠and itās really amazing how many times I hear cafĆ© owners say this, and rejoice in the new path they have taken. This is exactly how I found Adam Cruickshank, who came to Australia from the Long White Cloud over the ditch.
Heās no stranger to hospitality, having managed gastro pubs while in New Zealand, before moving to Melbourne in his early 20ās. Being locked up in an office, and chained to a desk from 9 to 5 proved to be too much of a challenge for his rebellious personality. āCoffee came calling like a choir of schoolboysā. Now several years in, and 3 venues later; itās safe to say Adam has found his place. āI was miserable in the corporate world, and needed to get out. The cafĆ© keeps me busy, and gives me a chance to connect with peopleā. Following the success of his Mt Waverley site, and Notting Hill location; it was time to move closer to the city, and so Crooked Letters Prahran was born. The name Crooked Letters is a reference to Adamās nickname, care of Outkastās popular song which echoes his surname.
The cafĆ© is housed in a former milk bar, and Adam has kept vestiges of its former resident, whilst also keeping things simple so that regulars are afforded an opportunity to simply be, and relish the communal vibe. Head barista Hugo knows everyoneās order; regulars know each otherās names, as well as each otherās dogās names. This is exactly why I love a local cafĆ©, especially one set in the backstreets of an inner-city suburb. Itās shedding light on the one thing we humans crave- āconnectionā. In an age where social isolation is rife, itās nice to know thereās a place for connection, and a sense of belonging.
Iām happy to say, the coffee was as rich as the social value this place holds. Coffee of the day was the Kenya Nyakabugi, a beautifully balanced coffee, with notes of black tea, hints of dark berries, and...

You know when you think of a person or place and you get the warm & fuzzies? That's how I feel about Crooked Letters. I moved to the Prahran area about 6months ago and it quickly became my regular place.
Main reasons: Cute decor (it's a converted laundromat!). Owners clearly care about their staff and customers. Dog friendly - even offers free dog treats! They love dogs there!
Good food & coffee! āš„Æ And the owners really care about you and are unfailingly genuine, courteous and nice! I can only think of one other coffee place in the area that feels this genuinely caring. Most places act like you're lucky to be served and you should be grateful for the privilege of being there. Crooked Letters is NOT that. They love Prahran and our pups!
Oh and if you're a semi regular like me, every time I go in they remember my order and it's ready within a few mins max. I just really appreciate being treated like a person of value by a business. It actually...
