Curry Capers is a special restaurant. Although Keon Park Station isn't the end of the train line, it often feels like it is. It also often feels like the only reason to come out this way (unless you live nearby) is Curry Capers, a small and magical Indian restaurant on Johnston st, surrounded by the semi-industrial areas of Thomastown and the endless suburbia of Reservoir. Whoever is running this place is clearly interested in making fresh, homely and nourishing Indian cuisine. The freshness of the vegetables always stands out. With dishes like the Aloo Gobi, expect large chunks of fresh cauliflower and buttery potato, slow cooked to perfection. Same with the sweet, crisp peas in the Aloo Mutter. Their palak paneer perfectly balances salty/creamy cheese with the softness of a spinach puree (again, noticeably fresh spinach). On a good night, when the kitchen is pumping, 'balance' is the word that best describes these dishes. The service is lovely - always a pleasure to place an order by phone and rapid turn around times. Occasionally (on public holidays for example) the quality of dishes can change quite dramatically perhaps because someone else is in the kitchen? but this has only happened a few times in 18 months of regular ordering. Overall I have found this to be a wonderful takeaway spot for the very best Indian cuisine - beautiful ingredients and well-conceived versions of all the classics. A well kept secret perhaps, but please support...
Read moreA great "little restaurant" in Keon Park, in a stretch of shops that don't really draw people to the area, but I just thought I'd try out a local indian restaurant, and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food for the price and the service was quite good, even the chef came out to ask if I was enjoying the food, which tells me that they really care about quality!!! I noticed customers coming in ordering/picking up take-away were Indian...i guess that speaks for itself.
From the complimentary and refreshing mint yoghurt with the crisp bread, to the very tasty and perfectly spiced Lamb Tikka masala, accompanied by the fresh and slightly zesty Kuchumber salad, the Kashmiri and Masala Kulcha Naan breads, also very nice and finally the pleasant carrot pudding, the lot came out to $27.50.
