Flour + Salt — Restaurant in Melbourne

We have eaten at Flour + Salt probably twice a year for four years, and have had take away many times. It is the consistency in the quality of the meals and the wonderful staff that keep us coming back. We had dinner there recently and once again, it delivered. My husband is a coeliac so we ordered the gluten free Garlic Pizza and Penne Ragu, with broccolini and fries on the side. The pizza is so good, we always have that "are you sure this is gluten free?" moment. The ragu was the perfect amount of sauce to pasta, and the meat was so tender. Again, the gluten free pasta was delicious. The house made chilli oil and parmesan that they place on each table is such a nice touch and tastes great. To top it off, the staff are always incredibly friendly and efficient - the waitress recognised us from our visit mid last year and welcomed us back! The atmosphere can be a little bit loud, from the music to the chatty patrons, but certainly not overwhelming enough to ruin the experience. There is a reason we keep returning to Flour + Salt. It’s not for the great service, it’s not for the excellent quality food, its not for the good wine list, it’s not for ambience, it’s for the perfect melding of all those ingredients that make it a memorable experience. We are in lockdown, (Aug 2021) with no interest in cooking and trying to decide what to have for dinner, it’s a Monday night and no restaurant is open. When I saw F+S was open it was a no-brainer, we ordered mussels, yum, calamari, so tender and delicious, and a pizza that had to suit my wife’s lactose intolerance, all this prepared from the phone order to pick-up in 15 minutes. Pick-up was as easy as you like, the owner happy to see customers and us happy to support locals. The complimentary tiramisu was fantastic and a yummy surprise. I've had the pizzas as takeaway many times from here and was genuinely excited to dine in.

My family and I had a disappointing experience. We booked, and after being seated it took 10 minutes for water to come. Following a 50 minute wait for food, what was serve was so incredibly small I would've ordered more, if not for the already horrendous wait time. I complained to the waiter and the manager and they said I should've said something earlier. Should I have complained about the food before I had eaten it? When I did complain, absolutely nothing was done about it. When we then further complained when paying we were told that there was no problem with the food, as the size is the size, and that somehow main pasta dishes should be expected to be smaller.(?!)

I've never had to leave a restaurant to then go home and eat.
