Hapi Cafe & Restaurant Rye — Restaurant in Melbourne

On a beautiful summers day, we chose to dine at indulge by the bay. Upon our arrival of six guests, I went to politely, ask the waitress if it would be okay for one of our guest to bring her food from elsewhere, as she had severe food allergies, but before the sentence finished coming out, I was told very abruptly that it was an absolute no! Taken a little bit aback we asked for a few minutes to decide and then obviously made the decision to leave. As a business owner in the food industry this is something I would never do and this business just lost them selves approximately $200 for the day. The waitress continued on to tell me that all of her food was made on the premises, and that if our friend had a food allergy, she should’ve ordered it here. My friend and I visited for lunch and both ordered the chicken burger. Unfortunately, I wouldn’t recommend it or return here for food based on this experience. The burger was overpriced & tasted like pre-cooked rubbery chicken schnitzel from the freezer. After our visit, we saw another review describing it as a “dog chew toy”.. sadly we understood why.

While the staff seemed well-intentioned, there were noticeable issues with service & hygiene. We observed tables left dirty & a waitress sweeping food from tables onto the floor with her hand, not a cleaning cloth in sight. We also noted that members of another table dining at the same time left without paying for their meal.

That said, we did notice other tables enjoying meals from the breakfast menu, which looked much more appetising than what we ordered. It was a shame & I hope this feedback can be taken on board to improve food quality, service, and cleanliness...

We have now made this wonderful little gem our regular for coffee, brekky and lunch, such beautiful people, and man oh man can this man cook up a treat, we love the traditional Italian flair and passion they have for the food they serve, his homemade Italian baked beans are something t behold, you’ll never eat Heinz again, the breakfasts are incredible and generous, today we took our daughter there for lunch for her 18th birthday and omg, my wife had the calamari which you could eat without teeth, never tried calamari like it anywhere and we’ve eaten at some of melbournes finest and not had anything like it, the lasagne and cannelloni is phenomenal, so good me and my 8 year old went up to the kitchen and shook the chef/owners hand, he is a master, the coffee is everything you want, if this place was open for dinner we’d be there weekly, thank you guys you never disappoint, great conversation...
