Hecho en Mexico, Heidelberg: Where the Chimichangas Fly and the Service is Speedy Gonzales Fast
Forget everything you think you know about laid-back Mexican dining. At Hecho en Mexico in Heidelberg, they've swapped the siesta for a supersonic fiesta. This place serves up authentic Mexican cuisine with a side of lightning-fast service that'll make your head spin faster than a tequila shot. We're talking blink-and-you'll-miss-it speed here, folks. One second you're browsing the menu, the next, a mountain of nachos has materialized on your table. It's like they have a secret portal to the kitchen where tiny chefs with super-speed powers are whipping up culinary masterpieces in the blink of an eye. But let's talk about the star of the show: the chimichanga. Oh, sweet mother of guacamole, the chimichanga! This crispy, golden-fried behemoth is stuffed to the brim with savory fillings, smothered in cheese and salsa, and guaranteed to send your taste buds on a one-way trip to Flavortown. I swear, I took one bite of that chimichanga, and I saw a vision of the Virgin of Guadalupe herself giving me a thumbs up. It was that good. And the best part? You don't have to wait an eternity to experience this culinary revelation. The service is so ridiculously fast, you'll practically inhale your chimichanga before you even realize you ordered it. It's like they've harnessed the power of a thousand suns to fuel their kitchen efficiency. Our waiters were a blur of motion, a human tornado of menus, margaritas, and chimichangas. They took our orders, delivered our food, and cleared our plates with the speed and precision of a Formula 1 pit crew. I wouldn't be surprised if they had a secret stash of Red Bull hidden somewhere beneath their aprons. Read moreAnother day, another Hecho. This time at Burgundy Street, Heidelberg. Hecho En Mexico is a newish franchise and I’m fortunate to have one 300m from my front door in Altona. We’ve dined there several times and can’t fault it. Tonight was a celebration for my son’s birthday. As 6 hungry adults, we rocked up without a reservation and were seated quickly. We’d all dined at a Hecho somewhere in Melbourne, so we knew the menu and what to expect. Known for its different take on Mexican food, you won’t come here and find food smothered in cheese or sour cream slopped on the side. Our margaritas were on the table quickly although we were a little perplexed as to why two of the four drinks were fizzy. And the glasses not as full as we are used to. But I try not to sweat the small stuff! Fortunately, the recipe was the same making the taste perfect. Hallelujah @patron tequila! The meals were tasty and portion sizes generous. However, my fajitas looked like baby food. The chicken mixed with a few pieces of capsicum, onions and beans didn’t quite cut it. A little mushy for me. Nice touch would be to have six tortillas not four. Otherwise, the food was great. Although smaller than Altona it still has amazing ambience with funky lighting, wall murals, exceptional bar set up and friendly staff. $238 for 6 people is making dining out almost cost prohibitive for this calibre of restaurant. Notes: A shout out to the waitress who was new and did her best job to get the orders right. Plus her boss was there to guide her as well. Outdoor dining available. Parking can be a challenge in #burgundystreet but after 5pm it’s better. Wheelchair accessible. Kid friendly. Dietaries catered for if you...
Read moreThis is a really great Mexican restaurant! I love the interior and there is a skull theme all throughout the restaurant. They have so much choice on the menu & have a completely vegan menu which is great. On Sundays they have a half price on desserts deal which is great! My friend had the churro and ice cream dessert which is quite rich with the extra chocolate sauce but yummy.
There is heaps of drinks to pick from, as well as non-alcoholic options. I tried the classic tequila margarita that was $10. It was strong but yummy and very refreshing!
It took us a while to pick what we wanted as we wanted to try so many things. We had the nachos with a side of avocado, the beef empanadas had beef, prawn and pork tacos. They’re is a deal to order 3 tacos for $21.50 which has you save $2.50. Many of the dishes are perfect to share.
Recently I tried the burrito bowl with stewed beef which was filling and very tasty. You can choose to have extra toppings including guacamole and other meats or vegetables like beans or jackfruit. My friend had the paella with chorizo and prawn which was very delicious and can easily be shared among two.
