Don't go here.
We booked to come here for a birthday at 7pm on Saturday night. After being seated we were told that we needed to leave by 8.30pm, which is not uncommon for busy restaurants at this time so we didn't have a problem with this. We quickly ordered our drinks and entrees, and told the waiter to come back for the mains. Our drinks included a single classic margarita, and a single piña chipotle margarita. At about 7.30pm, our waiter said, you need to be out by 8.30pm, I will take your order for mains now (we thought it was a little rude but that's okay, they were busy) so we ordered 1x quesadilla and 2x California burrito's with chicken.
Our drinks and entrees were served quite quickly, and the drinks were very good!
After this is where the problems started (beside the fact we were told twice before ordering that we needed to be out by 8.30pm). Because our drinks were so good, shortly after ordering our mains we decided to order a jug of the classic margarita at $48. The jug came out, and we were extremely disappointed that it tasted like it had no alcohol in it at all. It tasted like cordial/margarita mix and was FULL of ice. Because we were so disappointed with our margarita jug (which was still more than half full at this stage) when our mains finally arrived (at 8.12pm) we explained to the waiter that we felt the jug tasted in no way like it had alcohol in it as opposed to our first drinks, and we didn't feel that it was fair to be charged $48 for this. The waiter didn't really say anything, and another waiter saw we didn't look happy so he came over (the same waiter who took our order for mains). We again explained that we weren't happy with the drink and why, however he was pretty rude in his response, he disagreed and said that they used the quantity of 3x margaritas and topped it up with more mixer to fill the jug, and if we remained unhappy to talk to the manager and pointed up to the register/bar. We accepted that we should mention this when paying and began to eat our mains.
Our burritos, which took over 40 minutes from the time of ordering were BARELY even slightly warm inside! Not sure how something that took this long could basically be cold. Given that it was made extremely clear to us that we had to be out of the restaurant 18 minutes later and that we had already complained about the drink when we typically aren't the type to complain about something unless it's basically extortion (which the jug was), we didn't bother saying anything about the food.
Our invoice was also put on our table 2 minutes after our food came, reinforcing the whole 'you must be out by 8.30pm'.
After not finishing our mains and leaving half of the jug behind, we went to pay our bill (just before 8.30pm because we didn't want to cop the wrath if we were late) and at this point it was the supervisor who served us. We calmly and politely explained that we weren't happy with the jug, that there was a significant difference between this and our first drinks which were $30 less, and that we were in no way prepared to pay the $48 for this. The supervisor was instantly argumentative and rude, dismissing the feedback. She spoke over us and would not listen, she refused to acnowledge our opinion, and without using the word she essentially called us liars, saying that they use the same quantity as 3x margaritas. She said 'why didn't you say anything' to which we confirmed that we had, infact we told two waiters but obviously that was inadequate. In the service industry you would typically expect some sort of insincere apology at the very least, which we also didn't receive. Because of her unwillingness to assist or acknowledge our frustration, we accepted a 10% discount she begrudgingly offered and left.
Overall, the food was average at best (with the exception of the cold burritos which were awful) but I wish I could give 0 stars because of the service. Avoid...
Read moreThis was my first time to a Hecho en Mexico, and what a wonderful experience it was! Having recently returned from Mexico, I was feeling nostalgic for my trip there, and wanted a bit of Sunday afternoon fun to try and evoke the memories from a fabulous holiday, and what better way to do that than eating some Mexican food and having a few Coronas! I ended up at Hecho en Mexico in South Yarra, and straight away I was transported back to those brightly coloured restaurants of Mexico. The decor is vibrant and uplifting, the Coronas colds and the cocktails spicy! We were greeted by the owners, Prinz and Sinan, who made me and my partner feel right at home: they were friendly and welcoming, reminiscent of the Mexican hospitality. The service was quick and effcient, and the Coronas went down well. Now for the food: we were not disappointed, their food is really lovely. The menu is extensive, and the flavours take you back to Mexico. We had the chilli fries which were so good, and the jalapeno poppers: these were divine. Battered fish tacos followed (my favourite!): these were beautiful. And then the mains: I had the fried chicken and chimichurri burrito and my partner had the chicken ensalata, both so good. Dessert was a couple more Coronas! This is a really lovely restaurant, warming and comforting, with amazing food, and yes, it took me back to Mexico! I'll definitley be coming back here, and if you want that authentic Mexican experience, I'd suggest you come here as well. Thanks for a great afternoon, see you soon...
Read moreHaving worked in the hospitality industry in the past, I don't usually write negative reviews online. However, my experience at Hecho en Mexico was so bad I really feel compelled to share it with others. Firstly, when my partner and I arrived, there was no record of our booking. The woman who seated us seemed quite skeptical that we'd even made one, but she managed to find us a table grudgingly. The table itself had stools rather than chairs, so we politely asked her if we could swap our stools for some so we could hang our coats on the backs of them. She snapped at us about how all of the tables in the restaurant were booked and then sauntered off. When she came back shortly afterwards, she rudely informed us that we could move to another table. Thinking that perhaps there was a misunderstanding and she was having a moment of frustration, I asked her if there was an issue, but, again, she was rude and dismissive. At that point, we'd had enough and left. We weren't going to spend our money to be treated like unwelcome guests. That is the first and the last time I ever visit their restaurant, as I feel that the quality of service is lacking. The restaurant we went to afterwards was 100 times better. Perhaps the waitress in question should reconsider working with the public, as she clearly has an...
