We were invited to Abacus which is one of the most instagrammable spaces in Melbourne. The super high ceilings with beautiful dangling pendants lights create a really contemporary environment and the greenery is abound making for quite a lux setting. The menu is not your typical brunch fare, it’s definitely elevated to rather fancy standards, perhaps a little too fancy for my tastes. I had the avocado on toast which was served on a vibrant beetroot sourdough which was pretty cool with some squacqerone cheese. This is a fresh Italian cream cheese which was yummy. Our sweet dish however was a little strange for a lunch menu item, rhubarb and cinnamon donuts with liquid nitrogen. This is really more of a dessert even with the presence of the tart rhubarb. I think this dish would have been more enjoyable had I not eaten it post the avocado toast as it sat in the liquid and became extremely soggy post the theatrical smoke show. Regardless while it’s certainly a pretty dish it is most definitely not a substantial lunch item so for $23 don’t expect to be full. Original review Was popping to the Prahran market to buy gourmet goodies for Dinner En Blanc and stumbled on the super dooper Abacus. Open less than three months it's already cemented itself as a go to brunch spot with its beautiful open space. There was quite a line when we arrived at around 12.30 so given I we starving I used the time to Insta stalk the dishes and aid my selection. Less then ten minutes passed and we were ushered to cool (open) windowsill seating. The menu was all things eclectic think charcoal toast, fennel nips and volcanic rock (what does it all mean??) so I decided on the special which was rolled oats milled and roasted to order (faaaancy) with roof honey. Wow. Finally a stunning breakfast dish sans flowers. It was absolutely beautiful, well balanced and really delicious. The mint gave it a little something to balance the sweetness but why you no destem the strawberries?? My friend ordered boring old scrambled eggs on toasts (hooray they give you two pieces of bread) with a side of tomatoes and another side of mozzarella. It came out looking spectacular. They must be some seriously free roaming chickens because I've never seen eggs that yellow. The cheese was super fresh too (of course I tried some it looked amazing). My other even more boring friend had Vegemite on toast which is usually unremarkable but the house baked bread was apparently excellent. There was also a dj spinning which sounds kind of off for brunch but was actually really cool. The giant to the ceiling fig tree was stunning and the woodfired oven took pride of place for the nighttime pizzas. Interiors and food utter perfection

The overall vibe of the whole restaurant is great and we had a good time, that’s why I will give it 5 stars despite some of the dishes could be improved. Took a while for the waiter to come but other than that the service was great. Christian was very friendly and the food came out on time. We have been here before for the afternoon/dinner menu. The tartare is fantastic, a must try! The pasta was ok as it was under seasoned. Came here to try the Abacus Seashore Board because the photos looked so nice. This is my honest opinion: Not the best seafood I’ve had, don’t order it for the taste, but order it for the gram because it looks stunning! Scallops were not sweet (compared to the Japanese restaurants), the octopus was way too salty and no texture, mussels had beards left on (if I’m paying $90 I would expect the mussels to be cleaned properly), oysters were small and not very fresh tasting. The saving grace of this dish was the large king prawns and pipis. Prawns were large, sweet and full of flavour. Pipis we’re just delicious and well cooked, it tasted delightful with the mignonette. Overall, if you are not concerned about the taste of seafood, you can order this dish for the pretty presentation :) The blue swimmer crab crumpets were delicious, full of flavour and the crumpet was melt in the mouth, highly recommend this dish!

Edit: Changing review from 2/5 to 1/5 after seeing blatant fake 5* reviews Coming here again after a really pleasant first experience, but vastly disappointed after coming back. TL;DR: Service during entree was good. After dinner, it was non existent. Food overall was below average at best, steak was tough, fish had bones. Lobster cigar was good though. Not to mention 10% Surcharge on a Saturday. Things were going pleasantly at the start. Quick and attentive service, got our drinks and entrees rather quickly. Received the lobster cigars, cucumber, salmon and octopus to start. Lobster is delicious as always. The rest werent as delicious in comparison, but serviceable. Loved the ikura on the cucumber, but had an overwhelming tang. Salmon was a bit dry, and muted. The octopus was not bad, but preferred the accompanying crispy potatoes that were served with it. We later ordered our main; a porterhouse, fish of the day (rockling), and the shrimp linguine. Food arrives promptly. This is when evrything went downhill. The porterhouse that we ordered to be medium rare was tough and hard to chew. Accompanying fries were oversalted which my partner stated. The rockling itself was fine, apart from finding 2 bones in the fillet. The accompanying pipis were bitter and 2 of the 5 pipis had a sandy texture. The shrimp linguine was bland but felt immensely better in comparison after having the other 2 mains. After we were served these mains, the waitress serving us never came back to check on us. Only service we had was when we stood up to pay for the bill. Bit peeved by the 10% surcharge on a Saturday. Really disappointed with the food and service that we received today, especially in comparison to the last visit which we had flawless service and food.

@abacus_melbourne is one my most favourite restaurants in South Yarra! The space is so gorgeous and open which is perfect for enjoying the sunshine for an early dinner or the balmy nights! The ambience is always spot on! When we arrived we were greeted by some beautiful live music and there is a happy hour between 4 and 6pm which you must take advantage of! What we ate: 💖 Croquettes with caramelised cauliflower & aged cheddar, harissa sour cream 🦑 Charcoal-grilled southern calamari with house kimchi, kipfler, espelette pepper ✨ Geelong duck breast with braised king oyster mushroom, crisp kale, cherry jus 🐟 Bass straight rockling fillet with cauliflower, chilli & cuttlefish dumpling, avruga caviar & mizuna 🍸 Espresso Martini & their signature flaming marg which I am obsessed with! defs a must order Everything we had was delicious, the calamari had a beautiful charcoal flavour and was much more tender than I first thought when I laid my eyes on it! Absolutely divine! The duck was perfectly cooked however I would’ve loved a crispier skin! The barramundi was unable to be faulted- it was delicious- delicate, fresh and the cuttlefish dumpling was amazing! The whole dish paired so well together! I’ll definitely keep on coming back here! They also do brunch which I have had and it is also delicious!! 4.5/5 #invite 💖

Note: Visited and review written in February 2024. We went for an early Sunday dinner at 5pm and there was a guy playing live music which gave the venue a nice relaxing vibe. The overall dining experience was forgettable. We looked at menus online before choosing a restaurant and for some reason, the menu at Abacus in person had more expensive prices than their website (same seasonal summer menu). The food is subpar for the price. We got the $50 scotch fillet with pepper and whiskey jus. Sounded amazing on paper but we couldn’t finish more than a bite each. The sauce was awful and overpowered any flavour of the steak (if any). The fries were bland and I couldn’t taste the chicken and chilli salt flavour. We liked the pea/mint/mozzarella arancini balls though. Waitress (Asian girl) was friendly but she did not bother writing down our order, presumably as she thought she could remember it… she could not, and the order came out wrong. It’s a pet peeve of mine. Please don’t be lazy/arrogant and just write it down. We might go back one day for happy hour drinks (between 4-6pm) and live music but definitely not for the food. There are much better spots in the area.

10/10 for aesthetics such a nice venue to meet friends for dinner on a warm Melb night on Chaps. Not sure if the team was short staffed for a Thursday however we couldn’t catch a break to get water refills or drinks and that was pretty much the theme of the night. When we did catch someone passing by they were friendly and attentive - but it was a matter of catching them on the go which was a distraction- drinks took a really long time to the point we thought they had been forgotten. We ordered everything off the snack menu to get a good feel - the focaccia was unappetising resembling thinly sliced gluten free toast with sun dried tomatoes thrown on top- really dry and not a traditional focaccia as you would envision, The Lobster cigar was tasty and well presented, tuna tartare was fresh and the arancini was a favourite. We didn’t explore the mains after that as the serving sizes were generous -more entrée than snack - although one of our party got the steak and that was by all accounts delicious- so def get the steak if you’re there Thursdays that seemed to be the local secret for $25! Budget wise was ok- I’d want to give this another shot for sure.
