Como House and Garden is one of Melbourne’s most beautiful heritage treasures — a place that blends history, architecture, and natural beauty in a way that feels both inspiring and peaceful. Whether you’re visiting for a tour, a walk through the gardens, or one of the many special events held here, it’s an experience that always leaves an impression.

The house itself is stunning. Built in the 1840s, it has been preserved with great care and offers a rare glimpse into Melbourne’s past. Guided tours are excellent — informative, engaging, and filled with fascinating stories about the families who lived here and the history of the estate. The interiors are elegant, with period furniture and details that bring the era vividly to life.

The gardens are equally special. Expansive, beautifully maintained, and full of character, they’re the perfect place for a stroll, a picnic, or simply to sit and enjoy the tranquility. From the sweeping lawns to the shaded pathways and heritage plantings, it’s a space that feels both grand and intimate.

Events at Como House and Garden are also a highlight. From markets and exhibitions to cultural festivals, there’s always something happening that brings the community together in this unique setting. It’s a venue that feels alive, not just a historic site frozen in time.

The staff and volunteers deserve special mention — knowledgeable, passionate, and clearly dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of the property. Their enthusiasm makes the experience even richer.

Como House and Garden is more than just a historic site — it’s a place where history, culture, and nature meet. A must-visit for anyone in Melbourne, whether you’re a local...

This is the worst mansion I've ever visited National trust. Now I will explain why. I booked tour and payid full price, Tour was gudeid very well by nice women👍After that i met with my family in garden to check around and take some family photo and while i took photo to us came stuff and demanded $ 550 for photo 👿 due to the fact that I shot with a camera, and not with a phone, although I explained that this was not a commercial filming. We are a family and I took pictures of my children in the garden. Then the stuff anyway demanded money from us and told us to leave the territory😡 for no reason!!! For the first time I meet such aggressive and rude stuff!!! I didn’t see the name of this woman, but she has a puddle gray hairstyle and smeared lipstick and she worked at the checkout today. I don't recommend to visit this place!!! The mood was spoiled and the day too👿🤬Please choose your employees carefully, otherwise there will be less and less visitors! Despite the fact that I often visited the houses of the National trust, but after this incident, I will not...

This morning I had brunch at the Como House with a couple of friends.

I am really disappointed when I find a beautiful location, like this one, as bad managed.

Our breakfast arrived after 40 minutes and after all this time my order was missing an ingredient.

Wait stuff didn't seem to know what they were doing.

Really expensive food and really basic quality. My "extra spoon of mash avocado" was 6 dollars??? my hash brown (certainly not home made but the one that you can buy frozen from Coles) 6 dollars!!!! Really???

End up that I paid $24 for 2 eggs on toast, a spoon of avocado mash and 2hash browns.

Really expensive... but you know... you pay the location and the good service... ahahha... probably just the location.

But the thing that really surprised me was that if you pay with any card (not just the amex) they add you an extra 1.something% because the bank charge them! Really??? This is a way to much, what do you think?

I will love to have an answer from someone. I understand who has a minimum for the efpos but our bill was...

A modern looking design for a colonial settlement grand home circa 1847 with double storey wrought iron federation lattice exterior. The iron decorative pillars also serve as hidden drainage downpipes must be another unique feature ahead of its time! The grand Ballroom downstairs is the centrepiece. Definitely join a guided tour as the stories of the early occupants are very entertaining. $12 adult includes guided tour - book ahead. Free timed street parking on Lechlade or Como Ave. Gardens are also worth a look see. Allow 2 hrs for guided tour, the gardens & perusing through the really nice gift shop attended by friendly volunteers. The current exhibition about the Ladies undergarments worn in the mid 1800s to early 1900s is "revealing"! Though how the women's business (period) was handled with such pristine white underthings is never addressed. Nor how the fine lacework trimmings were made manually & where the materials for fine muslin & cotton were sourced from - exploitation of Indian resources & slave labour cotton production!

🏛️ Como House, Melbourne – A Bit of a Letdown This Time We visited Como House on a Tuesday, hoping to explore its historic interiors and beautiful grounds. Unfortunately, the house itself wasn’t open for viewing, which was disappointing as that had been a highlight we were looking forward to. The entrance we found into the property felt a little neglected—likely impacted by the high winds the day before—but it did set a slightly underwhelming tone. The exterior of the house looked tired and could really benefit from a freshen-up to match its heritage charm. On the upside, the café was open and provided a cosy refuge from the cool weather. It was lovely to warm up and regroup there. We wandered through parts of the garden, which had potential but didn’t quite deliver the wow factor on this occasion. Overall, our visit felt underwhelming, though we acknowledge this may not always be the case. With a bit of upkeep and clearer access, Como House could easily shine as the elegant destination it’s known to be.

Como House is a time machine, taking you back to the Victorian era Melbourne. Built a year after the death of Emily Bronte and when Abraham Lincoln was the US President, Como House offers a snapshot of basic life - albeit for a wealthy family - and forms part of the unique history of Melbourne. As well as ornate gardens, the house tour takes you into the day to day lives of the well to do. The house is under constant renovation and takes time and money. Please come and visit and consider supporting wonderful location.
