Hochi Mini — Restaurant in Melbourne

We eat here quite regularly, (it’s our favorite place for a banh mi!) but had a very disappointing experience recently. After having ordered vegetarian spring rolls, we were very saddened to discover we had been given meat. We returned them, they asked us to wait while they made us some more. After waiting quite some time, we were given a bag which (promisingly) had a ‘V’ written on it. However, once again, we had the nasty surprise of meat! I don’t think I need to say that when you’re vegetarian, for whatever reason (moral, religious, dietary, ethical..) it is truly a horrible experience to accidentally eat meat. We asked for a refund and they obliged, but it didn’t appear they took the issue very seriously. This makes me concerned for their kitchen protocols and how they handle things such as allergens - as they clearly didn’t know which spring roll was which. Everyone makes mistakes but to make the same mistake twice in a row, with no real attempt to make it right is not excusable. Two lots of meat spring rolls went to waste and the whole experience left a bad taste...

We often go to Lorna two doors down but decided to mix it up today instead. Any of the locals would know how hard that is to do as Lorna makes such good coffee. The combination of Vietnamese and coffee may seem like an odd combination but I can say that it works really well. The coffee is of high quality and the machine that is used there is a great piece of work. The food is well priced and very good quality also, I had the Pork Banh Mi and two rolls. The only problem with going here today is now I have to decide which shop to visit where as in the past it was easy for me to choose. Almost forgot, the service was pleasant and efficient. Would avoid going here. My husband wanted a Vietnamese roll. We walked down to the local cafe a few doors down from Hochi Mini and got our coffees. After that my husband walked into Hochi Mini to get his Viet roll. Only to be told by the owner there that “out of respect we also do coffee here” and that “this time he will let it go”. How dare you! We are trying to support all our local small businesses during this time only to get that comment thrown in our faces! The attitude was present as soon as my husband walked in the door.
