Kensington Fish & Chips — Restaurant in Melbourne

Service was very friendly with a great atmosphere with local people from Flemington and Kensington (mainly) chatting and talking and laughing out the front which gave it a good vibe.

The food though was a let down. The batter they use is really thick and around 60% of our food was either over-cooked or partially burnt. I can only speak to the fish/chips/potato cakes and scollops. Their burgers and steak sandwiches did look really good though.

There’s a lot of inner Melbourne Fish and Chipperys who either cook great and tasty F&C’s or a step above business who cook thinly coated deep fried fish to crunchy golden chips which is personally what I like. So it’s a high bar that’s been set here in Melbourne.

Based on the other reviews, I decided to try the fish and chips. I tried the dinner pack that includes two fish, chips, seafood stick, calamari ring, potato cakes. Unfortunately - I was disappointed by the flavour and how it was cooked. The batter was not crispy and when I bit into my fish, it was similar to what you would expect if the batter was yesterday’s batch… rubbery and not crispy. Maybe it is just their recipe and this is how they do batter.

The fish tasted just ok. The chips not enough salt and tasted just ok.. I also got seafood stick, calamari ring which tasted average.

I tried a few bites and then put it into the bin.

Do yourself a favour and order burgers flake scallops patato cakes and enjoy an incredible feast! One of Melbourne's best traditional fish and chip shops. Consistently great food.! Thank you!
