Popped in for a quick drink but ended up staying for a couple. I think the woman that was serving me might have been the person that got some negative reviews here, but she was nothing but lovely despite having a stressful day (from what I can gather). We managed to have a good conversation when she wasn't doing her books (Which she clearly hated doing!)
I asked about whether the name has anything to do with the Labor Party (it doesn't). Apparently, it was a favourite haunt of Labor party members until they started to hold conferences there, which promptly got banned. Perhaps the name is fitting after all.
The pub really does have a "I don't care what you think" type of vibe/decor, which I like and it's kinda rare to see these days. The patrons all seemed to be happy and regulars, which is another good sign.
Shame I couldn't stay for longer than 2 quick drinks. I'll definitely be back for a proper look-in.

To make matters worse, the men working behind the bar were aggressive and intimidating, creating a hostile and unsafe atmosphere. No one should have to feel threatened or dehumanised when simply trying to enjoy a night out.
This kind of behaviour reflects very poorly on the management and culture of the establishment. Pubs should be welcoming and safe spaces for everyone, regardless of who they are. Sadly, this place is the opposite.
I would strongly advise others, especially members of the LGBTQ+ community, to...
Read moreMy fave pub in Melbourne. The Labour in Vain is a simple dive bar and ticks all the right boxes. Great selection of beer and cider on tap. Cheap prices. Pool table and cool tunes, played at a volume whereby you can still hold a conversation. Rooftop beer garden. Low key, relaxed atmosphere with no pub crawls allowed. Chips and nuts served over the bar in old school wooden bowls. No ridiculously large screens playing sports 24/7. Friendly bar staff. Lovely!
The ace up the Labour's sleeve are the music residencies. Top notch musicians, roll-up regularly and it's totally free. We saw Charles Jenkins the other night and had a ball. As...
