From the moment you step in, the ambiance captivates you with its modern and welcoming design. The attention to detail extends to the presentation of the dishes, which are not only visually stunning but also a testament to the kitchen’s dedication to taste and quality. The attentive staff enhances the overall dining experience, ensuring that you’re well taken care of throughout your visit. Whether you’re a local or a visitor to Melbourne, this restaurant is a must-try that consistently delivers on quality, and a truly memorable dining experience in Hardware Lane. This lane is famous for its numerous restaurants and cafés. Hardware lane is a thriving example of Melbourne's famous laneway culture, with a distinctly European feeling and unique red brick paving which make this restaurant as a highly recommended and must- visit restaurant. Last night, a group of eight of us headed out for dinner, and to our surprise, we were seated within minutes, even with no prior reservation. The service was impressively fast, and the food exceeded our expectations. The standout dish for me was the chicken thin-crust pizza—it’s hands down the best pizza I’ve had in Australia so far. The Fettuccine Carbonara was rich and creamy, a classic done right. For the vegetarians, the Vegetarian Paella is an absolute must-try, bursting with flavor. The crispy calamari came in generous portions, with each piece having a perfect balance of crunch and tenderness. I also tried the Char-Grilled Kangaroo, and I was blown away! I never imagined kangaroo meat could taste so good—it was cooked perfectly, and pairing it with mashed potatoes took the dish to the next level. As for the Baked Mushrooms, though there were only two pieces, they were delicious and satisfying. Every dish was memorable, and we left completely satisfied with the experience!

The food is lovely, especially the mains. However I would not recommend ordering spaghettis here. I have no complaints for the food I’ve eaten and the atmosphere is great. The only complaint I have is the terrible service here, specifically waiting time. I came here for my mum’s birthday 12 days ago and waited over an hour just for our meals to arrive. We asked to just pay for our drinks and leave but were insisted to stay as our food ‘would arrive soon’. We waited another 10-15 minutes for it to actually arrive. To compensate, the waiter told me they would bring a dessert with a candle and have the staff sing a cheery happy birthday. A different staff member came with the dessert with no candle, and just placed it on the table. I asked him to look at his docket again and he realized and brought it back. At that point the surprise wasn’t a surprise anymore, they then brought it again with a candle and that was it. Today the meal took 40 minutes to arrive, and they even brought the wrong entrees for us, with missing sides as well. Overall I would say Max offers a great atmosphere with lovely meals (would avoid spaghetti though). I would recommend the lamb shank and the pork belly (the kale is amazing!). The only complaint is the service time and service itself as well.

I never, nor try to, give any places a bad rating. But alas, it has come to this. - Cramped unpractical seating. Lots of knocking around. - Slow service. 37 minutes for a simple bruschetta as entree. A total of 1h7min for the mains to come out. - Staff running around back and forth (maybe needs new organization or more staff) and forgetting orders. - Looking around, there are many unhappy faces. - After waiting for an hour without any updates whatsoever, we wanted to pay for our wine and leave, however the waiter was adamant that the food STILL coming and refuses to let us settle the bill. - Ordered two coca colas that came out flat. - Reserved for a birthday and a tiramisu was brought over after we were done eating, without a candle, while asking if it is for us. Completely ruined the birthday surprise which we made a request upon reservation. - Once the food finally came out, it was alright. It was good, but definitely not worth the experience at all. I wouldn't recommend the seafood paella; flavour did not match its price point. Lamb was good though. Overall, an extremely poor experience and my advice is to walk down and pick a different spot.

Thought it was a good restaurant but the day completely ruined the image of this place. I had a good experience at this restaurant back in 2017 with my mum so I returned here with my partner. For the food, we ordered two chicken parmigiana and two little creatures. Parmas were soggy, oily and salty. I realized in my salad bowl there was hair. We were not happy with that, but it was not unbearable. The main problem was the waiter at the restaurant. The waiter made the rudest and most awkward jokes about my physical disability. I said it was okay but somehow he just couldn’t let go of it and kept trying to make up his mistake but that made it worse than what just happened. Sorry to say this but he seemed not properly educated to be in the hospitality and serve customers. He made both of us uncomfortable to stay there and also the price was effed. Two bottles of little creatures were charged $16 EACH, I am not sure about that is the normal price or if they ripped us off but either way it was a ridiculous experience.

San Daniele - san marzano tomato sauce, fior di latte mozzarella, prosciutto san daniele, rocket, shaved parmesan. Moroccan beef salad - marinated beef, lentils, chickpeas, pearl cous cous, pumpkin, red onion, capsicum, rocket, mint and pomegranate. Honestly, I was sceptic….big crowd, lots of dinners waiting, almost a full house on a Thursday. Thinking that the wait will be long, quality of food wouldn’t be there since the kitchen will be in panic and rush to push out the dishes. I was proven wrong! One of the better pizza I have tasted! The dough was cooked well, held ingredients well, slightly crunchy and burnt crust but well balanced, generous with prosciutto and the rocket was fresh and not withered. Moroccan beef salad was light, well marinated beef, the whole combination was just delicious! Packed crowds and draws in a large number of dinners but the wait is not long at all, plenty seatings and two kitchens in operation!
