This evening we sat down at 6:50 pm (see photo), ordered and then waited 46 minutes for our food. We watched the table seated 10 minutes after we sat down order, eat, get half way through their meal. When we reminded the waiting staff of our order they looked shocked, apologised, told us the “kitchen was a mess” and asked us to remind them what we ordered. Time passed. I made a phone call at 7:29 pm. Finally the food arrived at 7:36.

When it came time to pay, I requested a discount for the delay. I told the manager we waited over 45 minutes for the meal. A hawkish expression spread across the managers face, he looked pumped up and ready to pop. He marched off to ‘check’ my story with his staff. Nearly five minutes later the manager returned holding up a receipt for when the order was taken to the kitchen (after we were asked to remind the kitchen of the order) saying “See, only 30 minutes” and then bombarding me with statements such as “How long had you expected to wait?” (Me: “Not as long as 30 minutes”); “Are you saying I am lying? (Me: “I didn’t say that.”); “Had you expected it would take 10 minutes?” (Me: “No, but over 30 minutes is too long”). The ferocity with which the manager conducted this conversation could never have resulted in a shared understanding or a satisfied customer. The manager’s conclusion to the conversation was “That will be $82.50”. When leaving I mentioned that we were “disappointed” and then found the manager was blocking my path down Hardware Lane and wanted to argue. I told the manager “The last thing I want to do is argue - all I expect is to be allowed to offer feedback.”. The manager respond only by allowing me to continue walking with my baby in the stroller back down Hardware Lane in the cold drizzling rain. Would anyone enjoy such treatment?
