Osteriya — Restaurant in Melbourne

Incredibly sweet and friendly staff. Nice enough atmosphere, though it was on the quiet side and perhaps lacked a little buzz. I didn’t choose the restaurant, but dined with others who did. I personally found the menu too limited and traditional for my tastes. All of the pastas were tomato based sauces, which I am not a big fan of, so that limited my options. The calamari fritti was OK. Not tough, though not amazingly tender. It did taste a little oily which suggested the temperature of the oil needed to be hotter. The arancini were cooked well but ultimately bland balls of starch. I tried the gnoccho fritti con prosciutto, which I expected to be a very different dish, but that was my fault as some googling taught me what they served was a traditional Italian dish. I unfortunately didn’t really care for that. The prosciutto was fine but nothing better than I’ve picked up from any supermarket. And the cheese and friend dough puffs just didn’t really do anything for me. Overall I suspect my problems with this restaurant rest more on my personal taste than their execution. Though there were some smaller issues there. If you like more standard Italian traditional fare and tomato based sauces, this might be your thing, but I personally didn’t enjoy it. Food and service were excellent . We have been waiting to have a dinner here for a few years living locally

unfortunately they've been closed during Lockdown but would very happy to be there tonight

we started off with three entrees calamari was excellent the sardines were excellent and the arancini balls were also excellent although they were devoured before I had a chance to taste them

the main courses were also good I had the homestyle lasagna with was as advertised very rustic but perfect for what I expected my mother ordered something that wasn't on the menu but they actually made it for her a nice and simple spaghetti carbonara

my wife and son had a very nice lamb shark/ragu and my sister said is the risotto was good

all-in-all for a local restaurant you could not fault it

the service was excellent the prices were acceptable given the quality of the above special mention to the main mattress d was very friendly and made it an enjoyable experience also he was very helpful with selection of the food

What a shame after a lovely entree meal which I thought would be main sizes with one glass of wine I paid a whopping 73$! Of course due to Christmas eve there was also a 9.60$ surcharge. I explained that we thought the two dishes were entree sizes for 25$ each which I shared together with my partner since it was so expensive. The chef would not hear of our disappointment at almost no food given for 73$ total and he said thank you but never come back and pay the bill now otherwise I will call the police. I said can you not have some understanding especially on Christmas eve! Thank you, please pay, was his ungrateful and arrogant reply. The customer is almost always wrong in this country. Disgusting money grabbers! What a waste of well earned money.
