The whole experience was not ideal. We sat out the front and ordered our drinks and food and water for the table - which we had to ask for 3 times. Everything was going well enough. After we ordered, the waiter brought out the eftpos machine so we could pay. I've never paid for a sit down meal before the food came and that would have been fine if 2 of 3 meals hadn't been so underwhelming and borderline inedible that honestly we would have refused to pay. It also appeared we were the only table to pay before our meals, was it because we were 3 young people? Maybe? Bit rude tho.
We were told our meals wouldn't come out together as they were super busy, that was fine. Until we were told 2 of 3 meals would take an hour to come out??? After we had waited 30 minutes already. Thankfully they didn't, but again, if we hadn't of paid first we would have just left.
The fried chicken special was almost burnt, there was a hint of flavour and about a slither of meat on each bone. The creamy mash tasted like a whole tub of butter had been mixed in with it and the wait staff who assured us it would only be 1$ extra was 3$ extra, which wasn't mentioned until after the bill had been paid. So this 28$ meal was hardly touched. Ok, it happens I guess.
Then the calamari was so rubbery you had to gnaw at it, if you don't have any floss on you no worries, just use the calamari. When asked it the tartar sauce is dairy free the waiter said that they "usually cater for vegans." Which, isn't reassuring in the slightest for people with dietary requirements.
Unsure if it was the quality of food or potential for dairy in the meal - a trace of is fine and we understand there is cross contamination risks - but 2 of us had such sore stomachs and felt nauseous afterwards that we actually had to sit down to recover and go home. What a nice day out!
The hotdog kranksy was great and the atmosphere was cute. All in all, we just wouldn't go back and wouldn't recommend it. Maybe we were asking for too much, but for a city restaurant you kinda expect a bit more than shoddy meals and unclear...
Read moreGeorge Grigoriadis, son of Royal Melbourne Hotel owner Nick Grigoriadis gave a podcast with Danny Rants recently, the past 2 weeks, where he said he effectively broke into St. Augustines church situated next door to the Royal Melbourne hotel in Jan 2017 and ran a drug fueled rave party within the church, where people were od'ing on narcotics within the church. George Grigoriadis went on to laugh about how there were several ambulances in the street, and as the drug overdose victims from Georges and Danny Rants rave party were being revived and treated in the church by St. Johns ambulance staff, people were also being wheeled out to the awaiting ambulances who had been affected by drugs and narcotics. They laughed how one guy walked through St. Augustines Church, throthing at his mouth and clenching his teeth. The parish priest and the staff of St. Augustines had no idea George had raided their church that day with several thousand ravers to cause sacrilege on holy ground. The priest was under the impression the outside grounds would only be used as a rest area. St. Augustines Church is a place of prayer and a place where its parishioners celebrate mass and encounter Jesus. Never at any time was anyone aware a sacrilege had taken place that day where Danny and George had trespassed inside the church, running a stage, according to their podcast, where they were laughing about it 2 weeks ago and how they had duped the priest. Nick Grigoriadis, many parishioners of St. Augustines Melbourne will not be attending your hotel anymore. We are disgusted with what took place, and how we only just learnt about it on a podcast where your son was laughing about the disrespect and sacrilege he showed. Nick you must be proud of your son. An absolute clown. By the way, before George takes down the podcast on YouTube, the priest, and several other staff members have viewed the 2 videos put up by Danny Rants in their entirety, with George talking about raiding the church and 'not telling the priest' in one video and laughing about it, so it will be...
Read moreWent here for a Friday lunch with workmates, and I must say, it was a fantastic experience. They had been before and couldn't stop boasting about the chicken parma. I was a little rebellious and ordered the burger instead. It did not disappoint.
Food: I ordered the RMH Burger, and it was absolutely delicious. The succulent beef patty came with mushrooms, lettuce, tomato, and onion rings (I got three!). The special RMH sauce added a unique and tasty flavor. The burger was served on a potato bun, which I couldn't finish because it was so filling. The side of thick chips was generous and perfectly cooked, not dry at all.
My workmates ordered the chicken parmigiana. It consisted of a chicken breast schnitzel, crumbed with ham, Napoli sauce, and mozzarella. The meal was served with thick, fat chips and a fresh salad, along with a choice of sauce. They all selected the yummy aioli sauce, which was delicious.
Ambience: The interior of the Royal Melbourne Hotel is a great space. It looks like they offer various forms of entertainment, with drapery, lighting, and extra speakers for music and sound. There's a fantastic beer garden for dining and wining, as well as outdoor seating.
Service: We didn't make a booking, but we were able to be seated at a table for four. The service was professional and efficient, making our dining experience even more enjoyable.
Overall, the Royal Melbourne Hotel on Bourke Street is a great spot for a hearty meal and a good time. Generous portions, tasty food, and a welcoming atmosphere make it a place I'd highly recommend. Can't wait to go back and try the chicken...
