Nov 2023 Unfortunately I have to amend my score downwards... Two sushi with surimi is a new low in a $28 main platter, even if I said I wanted only a little salmon. The sushi were nothing special and the salmon roe has been replaced by cheap surrogate roe. The Wafu steak was good though and the chicken skewers very good. A not deserved bad surprise has been the 10% surcharge (+ 60c for debit card use) for Saturday and Sunday, of which there is no mention in the website, nor anywhere else. So we paid $11.50 more fir nothing, and the place was even half empty... So why the surcharge?!? Any response from the owner? 2021 It was rather late, but the seafood tempura was perfectly cooked, with a light and airy batter as it should, golden crispy and served piping hot. The Shabu Shabu beef was lean and more than enough, although we ordered an extra portion. The kitchen was out of fresh ginger but I got some pickled one and the attentive chef came twice to check I had enough. Casual and not elegant atmosphere and some Good Fortune waving Chinese cats that should not have place in a Japanese restaurant. The food was really good though and we felt very well taken care of. Isn't this what we all mainly want? Service a bit slow, but as we found out it was simply because it just takes time when someone is taking good care of cooking good food for you... I'll be back and check the sashimi etc., but for the moment this is one of the very, very, very few five stars in my reviews. Good chef, good food, good feeling....

Read moreFor an outer suburb Japanese restaurant this is one of the better ones I've been to.
The food is consistently enjoyable, and although simple, dishes are sure to not disappoint. There hasn't been an occasion where either myself or one of my eating companions have NOT enjoyed their meal, or felt like we didn't get value for money.
In terms of price I can't really complain. If you wanted to get technical, the prices some of the dishes are set at don't reflect in their presentation. That said, you will enjoy it nonetheless. Just know that if you're looking for a cheap night out with two or more people, the prices aren't so high that it'll break the bank. Between two, you'll expect to pay around $60 for one entree, two mains and a drink each.
The main issue I have with Shiki is the service. Often I've been seated and needed to wait upwards of 20 minutes before someone takes our order. After which, we're waiting upwards to half an hour for our food. This occurs even when they're not overly busy and is more of an annoyance when you're really hungry more than anything, really.
In summary, if you're looking for a reasonably priced somewhat authetnic Japanese dining experience in the outer suburbs, and don't mind waiting just that little longer for service, than this is a perfect...
